Staten Island, NY – The Wagner softball team split a pair of Northeast Conference (NEC) games against Saint Francis U this afternoon, first dropping a 4-0 decision, before besting the Red Flash 4-3.
The Seahawks are now 14-20 on the season, and 1-5 in NEC play. Saint Francis U is 20-12 and 3-1 in conference play.
In game one,
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) hurled the first 6.1 innings, including four scoreless innings, and allowed ten hits, two earned runs, two walks, while also fanning four.
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) closed the game, not permitting any hits while registering one strike out.
As a club, the Seahawks had ten hits from seven different batters.
The Red Flash broke through in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead over the Seahawks.
Saint Francis U tacked on another run in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to 3-0, and added its final run in the top of the seventh inning. With Wagner unable to answer, the Red Flash escaped with a 4-0 victory.
In game two, Bedker tossed a complete game, allowing five hits, three runs, and four walks. With the win, Bedker improves to 5-7 in the circle.
Wagner recorded six hits from six different batters. Leading the Seahawk offense was
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ / Centennial), who had a two-RBI day in addition to scoring two runs.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 2-0 game.
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) reached first after being hit by a pitch, and advanced to second base when Beasley reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs,
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley) plated the first run of the game, hitting a shot to right field for an RBI double to push across Parker.
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA / Valley Center) followed Bott with a single to drive in Beasley for Wagner's second run of the game.
The Red Flash tied the game at two-a-piece in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on a Sabria Neeb double to centerfield.
Saint Francis U took the lead in the top of the fourth, tacking on one run for a 4-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Wagner reclaimed its lead. With two out and one on, Beasley sent a deep shot over the fence for a two-run homer to make it a 4-3 game. Beasley now leads the team in home runs, with seven.
Wagner returns to action Wednesday, April 12, when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Iona. The first game is slated for a 2:30 pm start.
