Washington, DC - The Wagner softball team (4-8) fell to Binghamton University in a 8-4 decision, before losing to host George Washington University 8-3, in the final day of competition of the Colonials Invitational.
The Seahawks went 2-2 on the weekend, posting victories against Howard University on Friday and Saturday afternoon, before dropping both games today.
Wagner's current 4-8 record is the best 12-game start in six years, matching the Seahawks' record in the opening 12 games of the 2008 season.
Game 1: Wagner vs. Binghamton
The Bearcats opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, posting two runs to take an early lead over the Seahawks.
Wagner tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, when
Brenda Bott's (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) two-run double to center drove home
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/Centennial) and
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood).
The Seahawks' took their only lead of the game in the top of the fifth, when
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV/Galena) scored an unearned run.
Binghamton then widened the gap in the bottom of the fifth inning, garnering six unearned runs, taking advantage of two Seahawk errors, increasing the lead to 8-3.
The Green & White added the last run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, when
Brianna Tredway (Downington, PA/Downington)batted in
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch) hurled the first 4.1 innings, before
Gina Massaro (Fairless Hills, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) stepped onto the mound to finish the game.
Game 2: Wagner vs. George Washington
The Seahawks pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third inning as Parker picked up her sixth RBI of the weekend with a single up the middle that brought in Matteoni.
The Colonials answered in the bottom of the third, tabbing two unearned runs to bring the score to 2-1.
George Washington then batted in five runs in fourth inning, before adding one more run in the fifth to boost its lead to 8-1.
Wagner scored its second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, when Parker connected with a low pitch for a solo home run.
Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/North) drove in the Seahawks' final run of the game with an RBI single to right field, scoring Bott, to make it 8-3.
Over the course of the weekend, Parker paced the Green & White offensively, with one home run, six RBIs, while scoring five runs. Beeson was not far behind, recording one home run, six RBIs, while also scoring three runs.
Goodale was the Seahawks' workhorse on the mound, tossing 13.0 innings, in which she threw 223 pitches with 13 strikeouts, while allowing just five walks and 10 hits.
Parker and Beeson are currently leading the team in a multitude of statistical categories. After 12 games, Parker tops the squad in slugging percentage (.694), RBIs (14), hits (15), total bases (25), and is second in runs scored (10), and third in plate appearances (42).
Beeson ranks first on the team in runs scored (11), second in plate appearances (43), slugging percentage (.639), hits (13), and total bases (23), and is third on the team in RBIs (8).
Additionally, Parker and Beeson share the team lead in doubles (4) and home runs (2).
The Seahawks are next in action when they travel to Clearwater, FL, to take part in the University of South Florida (USF) Invitational, which will take place March 14-16. Wagner will play against Quinnipiac, UConn, Penn State, St. Joe's, FAMU, and host USF in the three-day affair.
