Washington, DC - The Wagner softball team (3-6) earned an 8-5 comeback victory over Howard University (1-1) this afternoon during the first day of the Colonials Tournament,which is hosted by George Washington University.
The Seahawks, who were the visiting team in this non-conference matchup, increased their lead to 13-5 by plating five runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the game was called due to darkness. With the Bison unable to bat in the bottom of the inning, the final score reverted back to 8-5.
Wagner got on board first on an RBI single by
Kristen Matteoni to drive in
Kelsey Parker from third for a 1-0 lead. Parker reached base on a walk before advancing to second base, and then third, on two separate wild pitches.
In the bottom of the first, Howard went on a scoring spree, pushing across five runs to take a 5-1 lead, but Seahawk pitching held the Bison scoreless the rest of the way.
The Green & White began their comeback with a three-run rally in the top of the second to draw within one run at 5-4.
Taylor Beeson keyed the rally with a two-run single to left, driving inÂ
McKaleigh Goodale and
Brianna Tredway to score. The Seahawks added another run when
Taylor Rauscher scored on a Parker RBI, to increase the score to 5-4.
Wagner continued its offensive onslaught in the top of the fourth, putting together a four-run rally which put the Seahawks in front by that 8-5 count.
Brianna Tredway started things with a base hit to left field. Beeson then hit a two-run a home run to give Wagner the lead for good at 6-5. Parker then reached on an error and came around to score on Wagner's second two-run homer of the inning, this one off the bat of
Abigail Beasley, to make it an 8-5 game
Samantha Bedker worked the first 3.2 innings on the mound, while
McKaleigh Goodale came on to work a scoreless 1.1 innings.
The Green & White return to action tomorrow when they face Howard again in a 3:45 pm game.
