Wagner Splits In Day One Of Tiger Clash

The Wagner softball team (9-13) split its pair of games in the first day of the Tiger Clash, downing Quinnipiac University (2-17) 3-1, before dropping a 6-3 decision to host Towson University (16-9).


Wagner vs. Quinnipiac University

Junior Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) earned her fourth win of the season, striking out eight, walking two, and allowing just four hits in the Seahawks' 3-1 victory over the Bobcats. Bedker struck out at least one batter in six of seven innings, and allowed just one Bobcat hit in the final three innings of the game to seal the victory for the Green & White.

Freshman third baseman Aerika High (Manheim, PA / Manheim Central) went two-for-three at the plate, tallying two RBI, to help secure the victory. Sophomore Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley) also went two-for-three, with one hit and one run scored.

The Seahawks scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Bott reached on a single to centerfield, and advanced to second base after Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA / Valley Center) was hit by a pitch. With two runners on, High hit a single through the right side to push Bott across the plate to give Wagner the 1-0 advantage.

With no outs and one runner on, senior Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ / Sunrise Mountain) grounded out, sending Gilbert home to give the Green & White the 2-0 lead.

Held scoreless after three innings, the Bobcats were able to cut Wagner's lead in half in the top of the fourth inning, scoring their only run of the game to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

Wagner earned its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Bott reached on a double down the left field line. Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA / North) then entered the game to pinch run for Bott, and was driven home by High's RBI double to centerfield.


Wagner vs. Towson University

Bott paced the Green & White's offense, registering a three hits and three runs batted in, but the Seahawks were unable to rally, falling to the Tigers 6-3 in a hard-fought battle.

As a club, the Green & White had six hits from four different batters, as Towson also tallied six hits. In the circle, Gina Massaro (Fairless Hills, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) hurled the first 3.0 innings of the game, while McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) the game, tossing three scoreless innings.

Wagner took an early lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynwood) hit a double down the left field line. Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ / Centennial) then followed with a walk. Bott doubled to left-centerfield for a two-run RBI to make it 2-0.

Towson stormed back in the bottom of the third inning with six runs, including a two-run homer to take a 6-2 lead.

Wagner added their final run in the top of the fourth. Beasley led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Immediately following Beasley's two-base hit, Bott connected for a single through the right side to push Beasley across the plate to make it 6-3, where the score would stand.

The Seahawks return to action tomorrow, March 23, when they face Quinnipiac at 12:00 pm before facing host Towson at 2:00 pm.
