Staten Island, NY – In their home opener, the Wagner softball team (8-12) split a pair of games against Columbia University (5-10), pummeling the Lions 17-7, before falling 5-4 in the second game of the double header.
Wagner vs. Columbia - Game 1
Freshman right-handed pitcher
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) hurled three scoreless innings in a row in the Seahawks' first game against the Lions, tossing three strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs to secure the victory for Wagner.
Wagner got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning, when freshmen
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown) and
Taylor Beeson (Mesa, AZ / Red Mountain) each walked, before advancing one base each after
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ / Centennial) then knocked in both Tredway and Beeson, hitting a two-run RBI double to right-centerfield to put Wagner up 2-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Green & White's offense exploded, as Wagner added 15 runs to extend its lead to 17-0. The Seahawks earned their first run of the inning when, with the bases loaded,
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) reached on a walk, pushing Tredway across the plate.
With the bases still loaded,
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley) sent the ball soaring over the centerfield fence for her first career grand slam, increasing Wagner's lead to 7-0.
The Seahawks continued their assault on the Lions, as
Aerika High (Manheim, PA / Manheim Central) singled through the left side, scoring
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA / Valley Center), who had reached on a double.
Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ / Sunrise Mountain) scored on an error, before Parker's double up the middle plated both Beeson and Tredway to give Wagner a commanding 11-0 lead.
Beasley added her third RBI of the game, doubling to right field to send Parker home, before being knocked in herself by
Beth Lewis' (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge) RBI double to centerfield.
MacKenzie Alfaro (Riverside, CA / Riverside) added another RBI for the Seahawks, singling through the left side to score Matteoni to put Wagner up 14-0.
Tallying the final runs for Wagner in the inning was High, who connected with a low pitch to send the ball over the fence for a three-run homer.
The Lions had a short-lived rally, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning, before tallying five runs in the top of the fifth. Columbia was unable to chip away at the rest of the deficit, and the game ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
High went two-for-three at the plate, with four RBI total in the game, while Parker went two-for-two with two RBI. Beasley was two-for-three with three RBI.

Freshman right-handed pitcher
Gina Massaro (Fairless Hills, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) tossed a total of four scoreless innings, throwing seven strike outs and allowing just one earned run in the Seahawks' 5-4 loss to the Lions.
Columbia jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, plating one run to make it a 1-0 game.
Wagner answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning, when High tallied her second homer of the game, a two-run shot over the fence to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage over the Lions.
In the top of the third inning, Columbia added four unearned runs, including a three-run homer by Alyssa Rodia, to put the Lions back on top with a score of 5-1.
Parker tallied her third RBI of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing High across the plate, before Lewis plated Bott in the bottom of the sixth for her second RBI of the day to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of Columbia.
Wagner was unable to add to its total in the bottom of the seventh inning, falling to the Lions 5-4.
High finished the day four-for-six, with two home runs, six RBI and three runs. Parker went three-for-six at the plate, with three RBI and two runs. Bott was also three-for-six, with one grand slam, four RBI and two runs.
The Seahawks are next in action tomorrow, March 22, when they travel to Towson, MD, for the Towson Invitational. Wagner will play four games over the weekend, playing host Towson and former Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Quinnipiac on Saturday, before squaring off with both teams once again on Sunday.
