Seahawks Seeking Seventh Straight Win Against Saint Francis U

Staten Island, NY - Wagner (16-11; 10-4 NEC) will host Saint Francis U (9-18; 7-7 NEC) on Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 pm while kicking off a season-ending two game homestand. Fans can watch the game online through via NEC Front Row beginning at 6:50 pm as Joey Wahler will again have the call.

Top Storylines
#1 - Wagner has clinched a home playoff game for the first round of the NEC Tournament and at worst would be the No. 3 seed.

#2 - A victory or losses by the Mount and Bryant and the Seahawks would clinch the No. 2 seed tonight.

#3 - The Green & White's current six game winning streak is the longest since ripping off nine in a row during the 2011-2012 season.


Quick Hits
* The Seahawks have won three straight and 11 of the last 13 games against the Red Flash.

* SFU leads the all-time series by a scant 32-30 margin.

* Since the Green & White moved to D-I for the 1976-1977 season the series between the teams is tied at 30-30.

* Wagner holds a commanding 20-10 advantage over Saint Francis U in games played on Staten Island.

* The Seahawks won the teams' first meeting 56-50 while limiting the Red Flash to just 25.0 percent (11-of-44) shooting over the final 30-plus minutes.

* The 50 points and 21 second-half markers scored by SFU were the fewest allowed by the Green & White this season.

* Wagner also committed a season-low nine fouls while overcoming a pair of 13-point deficits.

* Led by junior Marcus Burton's team-high 14 points in Loretto, the reserves outscored the starters for the second time this season by a 31-25 count.

* On Monday, the Seahawks overcame a seven-point deficit with just over four minutes remaining in extending their current winning streak to six games with a come-from-behind 67-64 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday night.

* Wagner also defeated the Knights for the seventh straight time and have won 15-of-16 against teams from New Jersey,

* With the victory over FDU, the senior class of Naofall Folahan, Kenneth Ortiz, Orlando Parker and Latif Rivers earned its 73rd win while breaking the school record of 72 set by the Class of 1969.

* The Seahawks have also now won a school-record 60 games over the last three seasons.

* Wagner also guaranteed its third-straight winning season, marking the fourth time since ascending to Division I in 1976-1977 that the Seahawks have done so.

* The Green & White posted its second-straight victory by five points or less after recording five last year and 14 over the past two seasons.

* Wagner won for just the third time in the last three years when trailing with five minutes to play while improving to 3-26 during that time.

* The Seahawks are also a perfect 4-0 when playing on Mondays and are 6-1 in February this season.

* Rivers paced the squad in scoring for the 35th time in his career with 18 markers and now has 1,484 points, just one back of Hall of Famer Billy Kurisko for 13th in school history. When the Garden State native, who has hit for double-figures 22 times this season and 83 times in his career, leads the way in scoring Wagner is 23-12.

* With 16 more points, Rivers will also become just the third Seahawk student-athlete since the turn of the century to notch 1,500 as well as becoming the third active NEC player to record the milestone. The Mount's Julian Norfleet become the second on Monday night while Bryant's Alex Francis currently has 2,054 career points.

* Rivers continues to rank among the league leaders scoring (14.2 ppg-9th), assists/game (1.8-17th), field goal percentage (.447-13th), free throw percentage (.832-5th) and three-point percentage (.378-12th).

* Ortiz also hit for double-figures in the win at Fairleigh Dickinson and with his 13th and final marker hit the 1,000-point plateau. The Newark native, who also finished with a team-high matching seven rebounds, scored 30 points as a freshman at Southern Mississippi and has 970 over three years with the Seahawks.

* The two-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year ranks among the league leaders in scoring (13.0-14th), assists (4.5-6th), steals (2.0-2nd) and free throw percentage (.727-13th) while posting a 1.44 assist/turnover ratio (11th NEC). Over his four collegiate seasons, he has 1,000 points, 442 assists, 419 rebounds and 180 steals.

* Burton, who leads all NEC reserves in scoring with 10.8 points (24th NEC) per game, scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime against the Knights.

* The Charlotte native hit two huge three pointers that helped the Green & White rally from a seven-point deficit with less than four minutes to play against FDU and has a team-best 36 points over the last five minutes of NEC games while making good on 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from long range and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free throw line.

* Due to Burton's proficiency at the line, Wagner has converted on 80.2 percent (81-of-101) at the line in the final five minutes of games during NEC play.

* Thanks to Burton, who is averaging 13.5 points per game while shooting 45.0 percent (9-of-20) on triple tries, the Seahawk reserves are outscoring its counterparts 11.1 points each time out during league play. Additionally, the Wagner bench is shooting 44.9 percent (42-of-106) from long range, compared to just 27.7 percent (18-of-65) for the opposition.

* Thanks to the trio of Ortiz, Rivers and Burton, the Seahawk guards have accounted for 70.3 percent (1357/1929) of the team's scoring. 

* Parker paced the squad in rebounding for the fifth time in six games at FDU with a team-best matching seven caroms as the Green & White is now 9-1 when the Sunshine State native leads the way on the glass. He is also fifth in the NEC with a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game and has notched double-figures three times this year, including a career-high 14 at Sacred Heart.

* Parker  also recorded his third career double-double and the first since his rookie season with a career-high matching 16 points and 10 rebounds in the rematch with SHU and is averaging 9.1 points and 7.8 rebounds each time out since rejoining the starting line-up 10 games ago.

* Folahan continues to pace the NEC and is 26th nationally with 2.7 blocks per game. The 6-11 pivot broke Frantz Pierre-Louis' 14-year school-record for blocks at CCSU, and is fifth in NEC history with 215 blocks.

* Over his last eight games, Folahan is averaging an impressive 3.4 rejections per game and is second in the Seahawk single-season annals with 74 blocks and needs just five to equal Miladin Mutavdzic's single-season school record of 79.

* Thanks to Folahan and junior Mario Moody's team-high three rejections in Monday's win, Wagner notched 11 blocks against Fairleigh Dickinson and now has a school-record 167 this season while breaking the previous standard of 163 set a year ago.

* In their current six-game winning streak, the Seahawks are limiting the opposition to 62.7 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting, including just 23.2 percent (26-of-112) from deep, while posting a +7.7 advantage on the glass. Leading the way has been Ortiz, who is averaging 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game.

* During the streak, the Green & White has limited all six opponents to less than 70 points is a perfect 14-0 this season and have won 29-straight when hitting the standard.

* Since head coach Bashir Mason, who earned his Master's of Science in education in December, took over at the start of last season, his teams have limited the opposition to less than 40 percent shooting in 31 of the Wagner's 57 games. Additionally, the Seahawks are a perfect 13-0 when holding teams to less than 35 percent shooting.

* Mason, who was a finalist for the CollegeInsider.com Joe B. Hall First-Year and Ben Jobe Minority Coach of the Year awards last season, is 35-23 in this his second year.

* For the second season in a row, Mason, who is 30 years and 17 days old, is the youngest Division I head coach. In 2012-2013, Mason led the Green & White to a 19-12 record (12-6 NEC) in 2012-2013. Both his overall and NEC win totals represent school-records for a rookie coach.

* Since the start of the 2011-2012 season, Wagner, which was picked to win the 2014 NEC Championship by the league's coaches, is 60-29, including 37-13 during conference play Additionally, the Seahawks are 32-16 in games decided by less than 10 points or in OT, 54-2 when leading with five minutes remaining, 47-2 when limiting opponents to less than 70 points, 40-9 when scoring at least 70, 45-3 when leading at the half, 35-4 when shooting 45 percent or higher and 19-7 following a loss.

* Wagner has been solid on defense this season, leading the NEC in rebounding (38.4), blocks (6.2) (15th NCAA), field goal percentage defense (.400) (36th NCAA) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.307) (45th NCAA).

* The Seahawks are 30-8 at home (19-4 NEC) over the last three years and 128-69 (.650), all-time, at the renovated Spiro Sports Center (since 1999).

INTERESTING
Saint Francis U, which is in sixth place in the NEC, is 7-0 against teams below them in the standings and 0-7 against teams above them.

LEADING THE WAY
Earl Brown leads the Red Flash attack and is eighth in the NEC in scoring (15.1 ppg), first in rebounding (8.4) and second in field goal percentage (.553).

IN THE FIRST MEETING
Brown scored 25 points with eight rebounds while going 10-for-20 from the field. Unfortunately for SFU, the other seven players combined for just 25 points, on 9-of-38 shooting.

KEY MATCH-UPS
* Saint Francis U's is ninth in the NEC in field goal percentage (.418) while Wagner is tops in the league in field goal percentage defense (.400).
* The Red Flash are also ninth in three point field goal percentage (.325) while the Seahawks lead the league in three-point field goal percentage defense (.307).
* SFU is last in the league, averaging just 30.0 rebounds per game while the Green & White is first with 38.4 caroms per game.


20-POINT CLUB
Ortiz notched his sixth career 20-point game in the win over Mount St. Mary's and finished up with a game-high 21.

SECOND-HALF SUCCESS
Rivers scored all 14 of his points in the win over the Mountaineers after halftime, highlighted by his first collegiate dunk. Additionally, he highlighted Wagner's 18-5 game-changing run in the second half with 10 points and two assists.

NOT A BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE
Ortiz notched 13 points, six rebounds and six assists while not committing any turnovers in the Seahawks' win vs. Sacred Heart. It also marked the second time in his career that he didn't commit a miscue with the first coming on November 26, 2011 against Delaware State.

THE BEST AROUND
Ortiz collected his Second NEC Player of the Week accolade of the year with 18 points, seven steals and six rebounds in the Green & White's 73-61 victory over Bryant two Sundays ago

STEAL CITY
His seven steals are the most by a NEC player this year and the most by a Wagner player since Dedrick Dye's school-record eight against Robert Morris on February 3, 2001.

LUCKY NUMBER 12
Sophomore Dwaun Anderson notched a personal-best with 12 points in the win over the Mount, marking the fifth time this season he has hit the number.

CLOSING IT OUT
In the final five minutes of games decided by 10 points or less, the Seahawks have converted 79.6 percent (90-of-113) from the line, led by Burton (14-of-15).

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
Wagner is 14-3 when Rivers scores at least 20 points and 23-12 when the Garden State native leads the squad in scoring.

BLOCK PARTY
Folahan's four-block performance vs. Sacred Heart marked the 17th time in his career that he has rejected at least four shots with the Seahawks going 13-4 during that time.

SERVING IT UP
Ortiz has recorded at least seven assists on 19 occasions in his career with the Green & White posting a 16-3 mark during that time.

CARDIAC KIDS
Wagner overcame its largest deficit (-13) of the year in the win in Loretto.

MAKES SENSE
When outshooting the opposition, the Seahawks are 15-1 this season and 32-3 since the start of last season.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES
Wagner is averaging 32.4 points per game in the first half while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, including 33.6 percent from deep, and 68.4 percent from the line. After halftime, the Seahawks are scoring 38.3 points each time out while shooting 45.0 percent from the field, including 34.7 percent from deep, and 75.9 percent from the line.

IN THE RANKINGS
* Ortiz is eighth in school history with 420 assists, 35 behind Tony Rice for seventh.
* Ortiz is seventh with 175 steals and with one more will match Terrance Bailey.
* Ortiz is tied for eighth with 324 free throws and with 16 more will match Jamie Ciampaglio.
* Rivers is fourth with 367 free throws and needs 58 to equal Mark Porter.
* Rivers is fifth with 193 triples and needs sixth more to match former teammate Chris Martin.
* Moody is eighth in school history with 93 blocks and with one more will equal Nigel Wyatte.

60-POINT CLUB
Wagner has won 26 straight games (24-0 since 2011-2012) when limiting teams to 60 points or less thanks to impressive defensive performances against Saint Francis U, CCSU, Monmouth and Sacred Heart.

FEBRUARY FURY
The Seahawks are 6-1 in February this year and 18-5 over the last three season.

LONG GARNERS BASEBALL ACCOLADES
Freshman Nolan Long was recently selected as the second-best pro baseball prospect in the NEC by Baseball America and was named as the league's preseason Rookie of the Year.

MASON ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2018
Mason recently announced the signings of Joseph Cooper (Wilmington, DE / Concord), Aaren Edmead (Deer Park, NY / Deer Park) and Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD / DeMatha Catholic) to National Letters of Intent. Cooper will be playing his senior season at Concord High School averaging 13.0 points, 4.0 steals, 3.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game as a junior at the Tatnall School. As a junior, Edmead averaged 14 points per game while helping lead Deer Park to a 17-4 record, a league championship and the Suffolk Class AA title game. Henson averaged 10.7 points while draining 48 three-pointers for DeMatha Catholic as a junior.

WAGNER PICKED TO REIGN SUPREME
For the first time in 21 years Wagner was picked in the annual NEC Coaches Poll to stand atop the summit at the end of the season as The Seahawks received seven of the 10 first place votes. Robert Morris and Bryant tied for second with the Colonials earning two first place nods. Three-time defending champion LIU Brooklyn garnered the final first place vote and was tabbed fourth. Central Connecticut was fifth, followed by last year's runner-up Mount St. Mary's, St. Francis Brooklyn, Sacred Heart, SFU and FDU.

SENIORS PACE RESURGENCE
The senior class of Folahan, Ortiz, Parker and Rivers is arguably the main reason that Wagner in considered among the elite of the NEC. The Seahawks are an impressive 73-46, including 46-22 during league play, since the foursome arrived on Staten Island.

LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY
The ball-hawking Ortiz ranked third in the NEC with 2.0 steals per game last year while pacing arguably the best defensive unit in the league en route to notching his second-straight NEC Defensive Player of the Year accolade and is gunning to the be the first-ever three-time winner of the award.
