Wagner Sweeps Games On Opening Day

Wagner vs Yale: Box Score

Wagner vs Norfolk State: Box Score

Norfolk, VA - In the first day of the Spartan Clash Tournament, the Wagner women's softball team posted a 9-6 win over Yale, before besting Norfolk State 6-4 in their second game of the day.

Wagner vs Yale

The Wagner softball team earned their first win of the season with a thrilling 9-6 come-from-behind victory against Yale.

The Seahawks opened the scoring with a first-inning run, as Kelsey Parker's RBI double chased home Taylor Beeson, who had previously singled before swiping second.

Following Parker's lead, Brianna Tredway hit an RBI double down the left field line to bring home McKaleigh Goodale.

Yale took its first lead of the game with three, third-inning runs while erasing the Green & White advantage.

The Bulldogs added to the lead with three runs in the fourth inning while building up what appeared to be an insurmountable 6-2 advantage.

Down but not out, Wagner rallied with a huge sixth inning. With Kristen Matteoni and Beeson on base, Parker crushed a three-run homer to center, trimming the Yale advantage to just 6-5. Beeson continued the offensive onslaught and tied the game up at 6-6 with a RBI double while scoring Goodale in the process. Abigail Beasley then capped the five-run Seahawk frame with a RBI single that scored Matteoni while giving the Seahawks a 7-6 lead.

The Green & White added to the lead with a Brenda Bott RBI single before Parker scampered home in extending the lead out to 9-6.

Yale would get one of those runs back in the seventh inning but was unable to get any closer as Wagner won its season opener for the first time since the 2009 season.

Wagner vs Norfolk State

Though the Spartans were first to get on the board with their one run in the first inning, that would prove to be their only lead of the game, as Wagner would persevere to gain their second victory of the season.

In the third inning, Wagner gained their first lead of the game, as Brenda Bott's RBI single brought Kristen Matteoni home, before Taylor Beeson capitalized on a Norfolk State throwing error, swiping home to lift Wagner to a 2-1 lead.

Norfolk State regained their lead in the bottom of the third inning, however, scoring two straight runs.

Wagner answered immediately in the fourth inning, as Brianna Tredway homered to left field to deadlock the score at 3-3.

Tredway came through again for the Seahawks, singling to left field in the sixth inning, allowing Taylor Rauscher to score the go-ahead run to bring the total to 4-3 in Wagner's favor.

Beeson scored her second run of the day in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by Norfolk State to increase Wagner's lead to 5-3. Adding to Wagner's total was Parker, who advanced to home on a sacrifice fly by teammate Hana Gilbert, which stretched Wagner's lead to 6-3.

Though Norfolk State added one more run to their total, the final score would stand at 6-4 in Wagner's favor.

The victory marks the first time in program history that Wagner has won the first two games of their season.

The Green & White return to action tomorrow, when they play Delaware State in a 1:00 pm game.
