Overall, Peck averages 19.3, second among NEC players, while Nwajei is at 15.0, tops among NEC freshmen. This backcourt combo has scored 20 or more points in the same game five times and the Seahawks are 3-2 in these contests.
Moon Township, PA – In a hotly-contested Martin Luther King Day matinee, senior forward Artemis Spanou scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in leading Robert Morris to a 74-63 win, offsetting Wagner's prolific backcourt combination of
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) and
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum), who tallied 23 and 22 points, respectively.
With Wagner trailing 67-59 and 3:22 left in the game following two Spanou free throws, Nwajei and Peck were fouled driving to the lane on consecutive possessions and each made both free throws, with Peck's pair at 1:58 cutting the deficit to four points at 67-63. But the Colonials were solid themselves at the line down the stretch, making 6-of-7 over the final 1:44 in holding off the Seahawks.
Led by Spanou's 12-of-15 effort, RMU shot 26-of-38 from the free throw line, a 68% clip, while the Seahawks were at 69%, converting 22-of-32 from the charity stripe.
With the victory, Robert Morris maintains a share of the the Northeast Conference (NEC) lead with a mark of 5-1 and improves to 9-8 on the season, while Wagner falls to 2-4 in league play and 3-14 overall.
The 11-point final margin was the biggest lead of the game that either team held in a contest that that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes. Wagner held the lead on several occasions in the first half and took its only lead of the second stanza with 10:48 to play on a pair of Nwajei free throws that capped a 13-4 Seahawk run that gave the Seahawks a 46-45 lead.
Peck opened the day's scoring with a three-pointer at the 18:24 mark. The Seahawks held three-point leads on two other occasions in the opening half, at 16-13 and 18-15, the latter coming on two Nwajei free throws with 7:47 left before intermission. Neither team could muster more than a four-point advantage the rest of the half with the score tied five times in that span, including at the half's final whistle when the teams headed to the locker room tied at 31-31.
The Colonials opened the second half with a 10-2 run in a 4:10 stretch in seizing a 41-33 lead on a Kelly Hartwell free throw with 15:40 remaining in the game. The Seahawks weathered the storm as a Peck drained a three-point jumper from the right wing which jumpstarted the 13-4 run that carried Wagner to its one-point, 46-45 lead.
Peck's 23-point outing came on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. The lefthander was also 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while dishing out one assist, in a 39-minute stint. Nwajei's 22-point output came on 6-of-15 shooting, combined with a 10-of-15 effort from the free throw line. The 5-8 point guard added team highs in steals and assists with five and four, respectively, in addition to pulling down eight rebounds while playing the entire 40 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore center
Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) asserted herself in the low post, snaring a team-high 13 rebounds. The NEC's top shot-blocker, who entered the contest ranked No. 12 nationally in blocks (3.00), swatted away four RMU shots but the 6-3 Nwaigwe was held to two points on 1-of-5 shooting. Freshman guard
Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) matched her season average with seven points, to go with four rebounds and a steal.
This was a physical, whistle-filled contest as the teams combined for 54 fouls with Wagner committing 28 and the Colonials' 26. Largely due to their efforts in trying to contain the multi-skilled, 6-0 Spanou, who wound up 9-of-17 from the field, the Seahawks were in foul trouble throughout.
While freshman forward/center
Taylor Butigian (Rockaway Park, NY/Christ the King) was the lone Wagner player to foul out, Nwaigwe, Rowe, redshirt freshman guard
Jazmine Hamlet (Manhattan, NY/Francis Lewis), freshman forward
Jackie Dluhi (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and senior forward
Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/Phillips Academy) all ended the game with four personal fouls.
For the game, RMU outshot Wagner 38% to 33% and held a 49-37 rebounding edge and a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint. Points off turnovers was nearly even, with the Seahawks holding a 20-19 lead in this department, while the Colonials led in second-chance points (12-5) and in points off the bench (11-4).
In addition to Spanou, who has now recorded double-doubles in 22 consecutive NEC games, guard Anna Stamolamprou and forward Jolie Olingended added 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Colonials.
The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, January 25 when the Green & White travel to Sacred Heart for a 2:00 pm tip-off. Wagner will then conclude a string of four consecutive road contests by making the short trek to St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday, January 27, to meet the Terriers in a 7:00 pm start.
On January 13, Wagner earned a 79-70 home victory over Sacred Heart while the meeting with St. Francis Brooklyn will be the first between the long-time, local rivals this season.
