Washington, DC – The Wagner Women's soccer team defeated Howard 3-2 in a thrilling overtime victory this evening, extending their record to 4-0-0 for the first time in program history . Howard falls to 1-2-0 on the season.
Wagner secured an early lead when senior
Jackie Nicholas (Wilbraham, MA / Minnechaug Regional) fed a pass to fellow senior
Amanda Sieferman (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro), who sent the ball soaring into the net in the 9th minute. Howard's Zion Clarke responded with a goal in the 20th minute to make it an even 1-1 match.
The score remained deadlocked through the rest of the first half and into the second, until junior
Sydney McCarthy (Canton, GA / Woodstock) connected with Nicholas in the 68th minute. Positioned in front of the net, Nicholas swiftly booted the ball past the goalkeeper to put Wagner back on top, 2-1. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Howard's Elaina Ringo scored off a corner kick to tie the game, forcing golden-goal overtime.
In the 97th minute of overtime, an expertly placed corner kick by junior
Alissa Bianculli (Islip, NY / Saint Anthony's) found freshman
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner), whose header not only propelled the Seahawks to a 3-2 overtime win, but also marked her first collegiate goal.
"We really fought until the end to secure the victory," noted Fritz. "It was an exhilarating feeling scoring my first goal in such an important moment for the program."

Jenifer Anzivino, "I think this game really showed the character of this team. The girls were determined to win this game, and their overall attitudes were amazing. They deserved the win, and I was so excited Megan's goal was able to finish the game."
This is the fourth game in a row that Wagner's early lead assured victory.
During tonight's match, 18 Seahawks saw action. Wagner outshot Howard 23-4 in the 100 minutes played.
The Green & White return to action on Sunday, September 8, when they host the University of Maine at home. Kick off is set for 12:00 p.m.
