Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team blanked NJIT 4-0 under the lights at Hameline Field, improving to 6-1-1 on the season in achieving the best eight-game start to a season in school histoy.
In the process, the Seahawks set a single-season school record with six non-conference wins in a contest that marked the first-ever women's soccer game played in the evening at Hameline Field. With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 3-6-0 on the season.
Tonight was also the Green & White's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match. Serving as honorary captain, and taking part in the opening coin toss at midfield, was Darlene Vigliotti, a breast cancer survivor and mother of former Seahawk standout and 2013 Wagner graduate

Sydney McCarthy (Canton, GA/Woodstock) was first to get things rolling for Wagner, skillfully side-stepping a defender before blasting home a 30-yard shot into the high corner of the net in the 18th minute, making it a 1-0 game. Though both teams had opportunities to score, neither was able to capitalize before the first half drew to a close.
In the 70th minute, McCarthy found freshman
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner) in the 70th, who collected the ball in traffic before rocketing it past the keeper to make it a 2-0 contest. Less than three minutes later, freshman
Sydney McNutt connected with sophomore
Daniella Davis (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township), who was able to slot the ball past three defenders and into the net, upping the Wagner lead to 3-0.
With time winding down, freshman
Maura Peters (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) delivered the ball to sophomore
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ / Central Regional), who maneuvered around the goalkeeper before knocking the ball into the net in the 84th minute, Jensen's tally fashioned the final score at 4-0 as NJIT was unable get a look at the net before time expired.
"It felt great to score, but even better to walk away with the victory," said Davis. "Overall, I think the team is playing extremely well. We have great team chemistry, as well as the desire to win. It has taken a lot of hard work to get us to this point, and I'm excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds."Â
During the match, 22 Seahawks saw action tonight as the Green & White outshot NJIT 22-8, while goalkeeper
Katie Marcy earned her second shutout of the season.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday, September 22, when they travel to Catonsville, MD to face UMBC. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
