Staten Island, NY - Senior
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) hit a walk-off single to cap off a furious comeback in the first game, and the Seahawks put together a four-run first in game two to sweep an NEC softball doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday. Wagner won the first game, 8-7, before taking a 4-3 win in game two. With the wins, the Seahawks improve to 8-23 and 2-6 in the NEC, while Mount falls to 10-20 and 2-6 in conference play.
Wagner trailed 7-1 in game one, as Mount capitalized for six unearned runs early in the contest. The comeback began in the fourth inning, when sophomore
Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA/ Eleanor Roosevelt) clubbed a grand slam just inside the left field foul pole to make the score 7-5.
In the sixth, the Seahawks knotted the game at seven when freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) hit a two-run, game-tying single.
Sophomore
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) led off the seventh, reaching on an error. She was sacrificed over to second by senior
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ/ Boulder Creek), and two batters later, Nicoletti came through with a single into left field to score Parker, completing the comeback and winning the game for the Seahawks.
All the Wagner offense in the second game came in the first inning. The first five Seahawks reached, courtesy of three walks, an error and a single. The third walk, to freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial), brought in the first Wagner run. Parker then poked an infield single to third, giving Wagner a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the game.
The Green & White added two more runs in the frame, on a wild pitch and a Huss sacrifice fly.
Senior
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run) picked up the victory in both games, both in relief. Betz threw three scoreless, one-hit innings to keep the comeback bid alive in the first game, before pitching 6 2/3 innings while surrendering two runs (one earned) and striking out six.
The Seahawks return to action Sunday when they host Monmouth in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
