Staten Island, NY - A 10th-inning walk-off gave the Wagner College softball team the victory in the team's final game of 2013, earning a split of a doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks took the second game, 4-3, after falling in the opener, 5-1. Wagner finishes the season at 12-37 and 3-17 in the NEC, while FDU completes the conference portion of their schedule at 22-20, with a 10-10 mark in NEC play.
The winning run scored on what was meant to be a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman
Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts). With freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) starting the inning on second base via the international tiebreaker rule, the Knights intentionally walked freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) to set up a force play.
Moore dropped down a bunt in front of home plate, giving the FDU catcher the opportunity to field the ball and fire to third to retire the lead runner. However, the throw was wide of the bag, skipping into left field and allowing Bott to score the winning run.
The walk-off was the third in the seventh inning or later for Wagner in 2013, as the Seahawks previously completed comebacks against Toledo (Mar. 10) and Mount St. Mary's (Apr. 6).
Wagner trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fifth in game two. The trio of freshman in the middle of the order came through in that rally as well, with Beasley driving home Bott and Moore scoring Beasley to take a 3-2 lead.
FDU was able to tie the game in the following half-inning, with the seventh through ninth innings going scoreless before the Seahawks walked off in the 10th.
Moore drove in the lone run for Wagner in the first game, as an RBI single brought home Beasley in the fourth to cut the FDU lead to 2-1 at the time. The Knights would score three insurance runs in the sixth for the final 5-1 margin.
The three freshmen in the middle of the order - Bott, Beasley and Moore - accounted for all four of the Seahawks' RBI in the doubleheader, and four of Wagner's five runs scored.
Sophomore
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) pitched the first three innings of the second game, surrendering two runs on one hit before giving way to fellow sophomore
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott). Zwick turned in a masterful effort out of the bullpen, holding the Knights to one run on three hits in seven innings of relief, picking up the victory.
In a pregame ceremony, the Seahawks honored the team's three Class of 2013 seniors:
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run),
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ/ Boulder Creek) and
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ C.W. Baker). Betz pitched the first game for Wagner, while Huss and Nicoletti appeared at shortstop and center field, respectively, for both ends of the doubleheader.
