Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College softball team was defeated by Manhattan in a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday. The Seahawks fell, 6-3, in the first game before dropping a 6-2 decision in a second game cut to six innings by darkness. Wagner now stands at 11-36 on the year, while Manhattan improves to 17-21.
Wagner jumped ahead in the first game courtesy of a three-run first inning. Freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) brought home the contest's first tally when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The next batter, freshman
Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts), brought in the second run on a single through the infield.
In all, the first five Seahawks reached base, and a third run came home on a fielder's choice grounded to short by junior
Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/ North).
Manhattan would storm back in the top of the third, a half-inning after a lengthy delay led to the ejection of Jaspers head coach Tom Pardalis. Manhattan would score two in the third and one in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3. The Jaspers then took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the sixth for the final 6-3 margin.
In the second game, it was Manhattan that took the early lead, scoring three in the second before adding two in the third and one in the fourth for a 6-0 lead before the Seahawks began their comeback attempt.
The first five Wagner batters reached to begin the inning, as Moore and senior
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ/ Boulder Creek) singled home a run each to cut the lead to 6-2. It was the closest the Seahawks would get, and the game was called after six innings due to darkness.
All three Seahawk pitchers - senior
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run), and sophomores
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) and
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott) - registered an at-bat in the doubleheader, with Zwick also making her second career appearance in left field.
Wagner returns to action on Sunday for the final two games of 2013, a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm, following the conclusion of Senior Day festivities, as Betz, Huss, and
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) will be honored before the first game.
