Seahawks Fall To Saint Francis U In NEC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Loretto, PA - The Wagner College softball team was defeated in a pair of Northeast Conference games by Saint Francis U on Monday afternoon. The Seahawks fell by a score of 4-2 in both contests. In the defeats, Wagner falls to 11-34 and 2-16 in the NEC, while SFU improves to 22-22 and 4-8 in conference play.

In the opener, the Seahawks took the early lead with a first-inning run, coming on an RBI single by freshman Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial). Beasley drove in junior Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV/ Galena) for the contest's opening tally.

Saint Francis would answer with four in the bottom of the fourth before Wagner rallied in the sixth to score a run on a single by sophomore Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) to cut the deficit to 4-2. That was the closest the Green & White would come, as the Red Flash thwarted the comeback attempt by turning a double play to get out of the sixth, and then held Wagner off the board in the seventh.

The Red Flash jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring a trio of unearned runs for what proved to be an insurmountable advantage. SFU would add another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead before Wagner answered back with single tallies in the fifth and seventh.

Senior Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) drove in the Seahawks' first run of the second game in the fifth inning, before Matteoni kept a seventh-inning rally alive with an RBI double to make it 4-2. Like the first game, the 4-2 deficit was the closest Wagner would make the game in the late innings, as SFU was able to avoid further damage in the final frames once again.

The Seahawks will close out the 2013 season with a pair of home doubleheaders this week, as Wagner hosts Manhattan on Wednesday at 3:00 pm before squaring off with Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at 12:00 pm for Senior Day.
