Betz, Zwick Toss Shutouts In Doubleheader Sweep Of Lafayette

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Staten Island, NY - Senior Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run) and sophomore Olivia Zwick (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott) twirled a pair of gems, shutting out Lafayette throughout a non-conference doubleheader on Grymes Hill. Wagner won the first game, 2-0, before taking the second game, 5-0. With the wins, Wagner improves to 11-30, while Lafayette falls to 9-32.

The doubleheader shutout was the first time the Seahawks shut a team out in both ends of a twinbill since Wagner blanked Columbia twice on May 1, 2007.

Sophomore Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) walked five times in the doubleheader, including four times in the first game. Parker reached base six times in the doubleheader, as she added a single in the second game.

Wagner scored the only runs of the first game in the opening frame. Freshman Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) drove home the game's first tally on an RBI double, scoring junior Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ/ Sunrise Mountain) for a 1-0 advantage.

The Seahawks added to the lead in the following at-bat, when freshman Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts) drove in a run on a sac fly for the deciding 2-0 margin.

Betz was tremendously efficient in the circle, scattering three hits while striking out four in the contest.

Wagner hung a crooked number in the first inning of game two, scoring four times to open the game. A double by freshman Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) drove in junior Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/ North) for the game's first run before the lead was quickly doubled on a wild pitch.

A two-run single by sophomore Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/ Stone Bridge) made it 4-0 for the Seahawks, who would take the final 5-0 lead on a Moore double in the third.

Zwick did her part to match Betz's game one performance, allowing five hits and a walk while recording four punchouts of her own.

Seahawk batters walked 12 times in the doubleheader, as Wagner was issued eight free passes in game one and four in the first inning of game two.

The Seahawks return to action on Sunday when the Green & White face Robert Morris in Moon Township, PA at 12:00 pm. Wagner will then play Saint Francis U on Monday at 12:00 pm, in a doubleheader originally slated for Saturday but pushed back due to impending nclement weather in the Keystone State.
