Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College softball team fell to NEC foe Quinnipiac in a pair of games this afternoon, being defeated 6-4 in the first game and 6-5 in game two. Wagner is now 9-28 on the season and 2-10 in the NEC, while Quinnipiac improves to 12-23 and 5-3 in conference action.
The Seahawks jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead in the first game, tallying a pair of runs in each the first and fourth innings. Freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left field. Wagner would double the lead in the fourth, as junior
Kristen Matteoni ripped a two-run double to right, giving the Green & White a 4-0 advantage into the late innings.
Quinnipiac would answer back, though, scoring three runs in each the sixth and seventh innings for a 6-4 edge that would prove to be the final margin.
The second game featured a wild opening frame, as the Bobcats outscored the Seahawks, 4-2, in the first inning. After Quinnipiac jumped out to the early advantage, Wagner got two back via Matteoni scoring on a wild pitch and freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) driving in a run on a single.
Wagner would tie the game an inning later, as Bott drove in two runs on a single, knotting the game at 4-4.
The Bobcats would regain the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs on an error for a 6-4 lead. The Seahawks would get one run back in the bottom of the frame when Matteoni brought home a run on a single, but it was the closest Wagner would come in the 6-5 second game.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn, beginning at 4:00 pm.
