Smithfield, RI – The Wagner College softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at NEC foe Bryant on Saturday at Conaty Park. The Seahawks fell, 6-4, in game one and 8-7 in game two. The Seahawks fall to 4-21 on the season, and 0-6 in the NEC, while Bryant is now 7-14 and 3-5 in conference play.
Freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) recorded three hits and three RBI, while junior
Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ/ Sunrise Mountain) and junior
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV/ Galena) each tallied four hits in the doubleheader.
Wagner scored the afternoon's first run in the top of the first in game one. Matteoni lined the first pitch of the game into left field for a double, and came around to score on a pair of ground outs.
The two-out scoring continued, as the next three batters reached, bringing senior
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ/ Boulder Creek) to the plate. The Seahawk senior lined a pitch up the middle, scoring sophomore
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) and Beasley for a 3-0 advantage.
After Bryant answered for one in the bottom of the first, Wagner regained the three-run advantage on a solo home run to left field by senior
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) on the first pitch of the second.
The Bulldogs would cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and added three in the third to take a 5-4 lead. The game was held at 5-4 courtesy of a running catch by freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial), crashing into the wall to record the out. Bryant would add another run in the fifth for the 6-4 margin.
The Seahawks would also open the second game with a crooked number, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Bott drove in the contest's first tally on a line drive sacrifice fly to left field, plating Matteoni. Wagner would add another run on RBI single by Parker.
The Green & White would add to the advantage in the second, tacking on three more runs for a 5-0 lead. Rauscher drove home junior
Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/ North) on a bases-loaded single to increase the lead to 3-0. The margin was increased to 4-0 on a bases-loaded walk to Bott, and to 5-0 on a wild pitch.
Bryant would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the second on a home run to left field. The Seahawks would strike again in the top of the fourth, as Beasley drove in Rauscher on an RBI single. Wagner would add another run in the fifth on an infield single by Matteoni, scoring sophomore
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/ Stone Bridge).
The Bulldogs would answer back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with an 8-7 victory.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 3, when the Green & White host Saint Peter's in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
