Staten Island, NY – After spending last weekend on the road, the Wagner College women's lacrosse team returns to the friendly confines of Hameline Field today when the Seahawks host Saint Francis U in a 3:00 pm start.
Wagner will be looking to post its first Northeast Conference (NEC) win of the season, end a three-game losing streak, and improve upon its 4-6 overall. The Seahawks opened NEC play with road defeats at Mount St. Mary's, a 9-6 decision on March 22 before losing at Monmouth two days later by the count of 12-7.
The Red Flash enter the contest with a record of 2-6, and will also be in search of their first league win as Saint Francis enters play with an 0-2 conference record, having lost home games to Central Connecticut (12-9) and Bryant (10-4) during the opening week of NEC Play.
The Seahawks have been paced offensively all season by sophomore midfielder
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township) who leads the team in goals (16), assists (23) and points (39). The dynamic playmaker also tops the NEC in points per game (3.90) and assists per game (2.30).
Senior attacker Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) has been major factor on the offensive end, as she ranks second among Seahawks points (22) and tied for second in goals (15) despite missing two games early in the season.
Wagner's next five leading scorers are all member of the Seahawks' talent-rich 12-person freshmen class.Freshman midfielder
Casey McCarthy is third in scoring with 17 points, followed by fellow rookies
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/ Clearview) with 14,
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township) with 12,
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) and
Tori McGrath (Albany. NY/ Bethlehem Central) check in with 11 points each.
Freshmen lead the team in three different major categories with Tumolo the team-leader in ground balls (18), McCarthy first in draw controls (21), and
Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/ Manasquan) is No. 1 on the team in caused turnovers with 15. In goal, yet another freshman,
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh), has been a mainstay with a 10.65 goals against average to go with a .438 save percentage in more than 500 minutes in goal
As a team, Wagner is No. 1 in the NEC in points per game (15.7), assists (5.6) and caused turnovers per game (11.30). The Seahawks are second in shooting percentage at .437 and third in save percentage (.442) and goals per game.
Wagner completes its two-game NEC homestand on Saturday, March 30 when the Green & White host Robert Morris in a Noon contest
