Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run) in the Wagner College softball team's 2-1, eight-inning victory over Green Bay on Saturday afternoon. In the win, the Seahawks improve to 4-14, while the Phoenix fall to 0-9.
Betz tied a career-high with eight strikeouts in the victory. Freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) tallied her second three-hit game of the season, pushing her average to a team-best .360.
A tie game from the second inning until the eighth, Wagner would take the win in the first extra frame. Pinch-runner
Hailee Renkers (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott) began the inning on second base, and moved up to third on a passed ball. With pinch-hitterat the plate, Renkers would come home to score on an RBI single that fell in between the shortstop and left fielder.
Wagner jumped ahead in the second inning, scoring the first run of the game. Freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) led off the inning with a double off the left field wall, and came around to score two batters later on an RBI single by sophomore
Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA/ Eleanor Roosevelt). The RBI was Albarran's team-leading 10
th of the season.
The Phoenix tied the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run but stranding runners at second and third.
In the top of the third, the Seahawks had runners at the corners and one out when Beasley made a heads-up play, tagging and taking second on a routine foul pop-up to the catcher.
The Seahawks return to action for the second game of the doubleheader against North Dakota.
