Box Score
Kissimmee, FL – The Wagner College softball team fell to Army, 12-6, in a Monday evening game at the Osceola County Softball Complex. In the defeat, the Seahawks fall to 1-9, while the Black Knights improve to 4-6.
Freshman
Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts) led the offensive attack for Wagner, as the Seahawk first baseman picked up her first two collegiate RBI on a third inning single.
The Black Knights opened the game's scoring with a three-run first, and were held scoreless in their next inning at-bat. In the top of the third, the Seahawks struck back with a pair of two-out runs on Moore's line drive single to center, plating senior
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) and sophomore
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood). The two RBI by Moore were the first of her collegiate career.
Wagner look poised to jump in front one batter later, but sophomore
Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA/ Eleanor Roosevelt) had what would have been a go-ahead extra base hit taken away on a fine defensive play by Army third baseman Kasey McCravey.
The Seahawks used a balance of patience and timely hitting to tie the game and eventually take the lead. Freshman
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) led off the inning with a line-drive, opposite-field double, and was joined on the basepaths by sophomore
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/ Stone Bridge) after a sacrifice attempt turned into a walk. Nicoletti then sacrificed the runners over, setting up a one-out, first and second situation.
Freshman
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) followed with an infield single, loading the bases for junior
Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/ North). Sullivan drew a game-tying walk, bringing Parker to the plate, who delivered a go-ahead single over the head of Army shortstop April Ortenzo.
Wagner was not done in the inning, however. The next batter up was junior
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV/ Galena), who extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI single, scoring Bott. Sullivan then came home two batters later on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
Army cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame, tallying a pair of runs to make it a 6-5 Wagner lead. The Black Knights tallied four in the fifth for a 9-6 advantage. Army added three more in the sixth for the final 12-6 margin.
Sophomore
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O' Connor) went the first four-plus innings for Wagner. Senior
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run) pitched the final two innings, falling to 0-5 in the loss. Morgan Lashley picked up the win in relief for Army, improving to 3-5.
The Seahawks return to action in the second game of Monday's doubleheader in Kissimmee against an opponent from just across the Bayonne Bridge in Saint Peter's.
