Seahawks Storm Back For 7-6 Walk-Off Win Over Toledo

Box Score

Clearwater, FL – The Wagner College softball team scored three runs while down to their final out, rallying for a 7-6 victory over Toledo on Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. In the win, the Seahawks improve to 1-8, while the Rockets fall to 5-12.

Senior Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ CW Baker) tallied three RBI, including the game-winner, while sophomore Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA/ Eleanor Roosevelt) tallied a career-high four RBI on a pair of two-run doubles.

Wagner trailed, 6-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh, when the Seahawks got the comeback bid going. Sophomore Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) singled to open the frame, and moved up to second when junior Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV/ Galena) reached on an error. Freshman Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts) then sacrificed the runners over to second and third with one out.

Following a fly out, Albarran came to the plate, with the Seahawks down to their final out. Albarran tied the game with her second two-run double of the contest, knotting the game at 6-6.

Freshman Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ/ Centennial) kept the line moving with a single, bringing Nicoletti to the plate. Nicoletti, who had driven in two runs already in the morning contest, drove in pinch-runner Hailee Renkers (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott) for the winning run.

The Seahawks put together their first scoring threat of the game in the second inning, as a Moore single was followed by a ground-rule double by senior Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ/ Boulder Creek), holding up Moore at third. The runners were stranded, however, leaving the game scoreless through two innings.

Toledo grabbed a run in the third and two more in the fourth, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. Wagner would answer back with a two-out rally, striking for four two-out runs to take the lead.

Albarran cut the deficit to one with a two-run double, plating Matteoni and Huss. After Beasley was hit by a pitch, Nicoletti came through, driving in Albarran and Beasley for a 4-3 lead.

The Rockets grabbed the lead back in the following half-inning, as Courtney McCarthy's two-run homer gave Toledo a 5-4 advantage. The Rockets would grab one more in the inning for a 6-4 lead.

The Seahawks threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases. Junior Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA/ North) opened the inning with a pinch-hit double. Following a pop out to short, Matteoni was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second with one out. Moore followed with an infield single to load the bases, but the rally would end with a strike out and fly out to left.

Senior Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA/ Broad Run) pitched the first four innings for the Seahawks.  Sophomore Olivia Zwick (Surrey, British Columbia/ Earl Marriott) entered in relief, going 1 1/3 innings before giving way to sophomore Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor), who closed out the game and picked up her first win of the year.

The Seahawks return to action with a doubleheader Monday to open their week at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL. Wagner will face Army at 5:00 pm, immediately followed by a game vs. Saint Peter's.
