BOX SCORE
Staten Island, NY – In their Northeast Conference (NEC) opener, the Wagner women's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart 5-3 under the lights this evening, improving to 8-2-1 on the season, and 1-0-0 in conference play. Sacred Heart falls to 3-8-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in conference play.
What started as a quiet first half quickly turned into a thrilling spectacle. Both teams fought to put points on the board, though neither was able to capitalize on their opportunities until the 35th minute of play, when sophomore
Siara Kolpon's (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) corner kick found freshman
Gabrielle Davis (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township), whose header not only gave Wagner a 1-0 lead, but also marked her first collegiate goal.
Shortly afterwards, freshman
Amber Coca (Riverview, FL / Bloomingdale)Â provided sophomore
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany / LSH) with a short pass in the 39th minute, allowing Konrad to chip the ball in from 3 yards out to make it a 2-0 contest. Unwilling to concede the match, Sacred Heart's Alyssa Brandofino found the net off a free kick in the 39th minute to bring the score to 2-1.
No more than 30 seconds later, sophomore
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ / Central Regional) commanded the ball, drilling it in from 12 yards out in the 40th minute to make it 3-1. Two minutes later, in the 42nd minute, Sacred Heart's Marissa Christy was able to maneuver the ball around a charging
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY/John F. Kennedy), to put the score at 3-2 before the first half ended.
Freshman
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner) connected with Jensen in the 60th minute, who knocked the ball in from two yards out for her second tally of the match, bringing the score to 4-2 in Wagner's favor. Sacred Heart answered with a goal of their own in the 67th minute, when Alexis Parlato directed the ball into the high corner of the net to make it 4-3.
With the minutes ticking down, Konrad pushed the ball forward to a sprinting Jensen, who stopped just short of the box before drilling the ball into the net in the 88th minute for her third goal of the game, sealing the Seahawk victory with a final score of 5-3.
"Our team has such great potential," stated Jensen. "We've gotten this far due to our team chemistry and our energy level going into each game." When asked about her impressively unrivaled speed, Jensen noted, "I've always been one of the fastest players on the soccer field, though I am still learning how best to use my speed to my team's advantage. It is a continuous learning process. When I can combine quality finishing with my speed, no one can stop us."
During the match, 20 Seahawks saw action. Marcy made eight saves.
The Green & White return to action on Sunday, October 6th, when they host Saint Francis U. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
