Softball Ends Season With Sweep At Manhattan

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

Riverdale, NY –
The Seahawks softball team concluded their 2012 season today, sweeping non-conference foe, Manhattan, in two games, 8-1 and 2-1. With the two wins, the Green & White end the season on a three-game win streak, finishing at 18-34 on the year and 5-15 in the Northeast Conference. The Jaspers, who still have more of a regular season ahead of them, slide to 8-35 in their campaign.

The Seahawks came out swinging in game one, breaking onto the scoreboard in the first inning after a leadoff double by Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) translated into the game's first run when the second-year infielder crossed the plate three batters later on a RBI single from Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek).

As junior Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) tossed two innings of one-hit softball, the Seahawks offense continued to score runs. In the top of the third inning, Wagner scored two runs on a two-out blast by freshman Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood). Parker's team-leading seventh homerun of the year put the Seahawks up 3-0 halfway through the opening contest.

Wagner double its lead in its next plate appearances as everybody in the lineup batted, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 6-0 advantage. Matteoni, Parker and Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker) each recorded a RBI in the inning, giving the Seahawks a commanding lead.

The Jaspers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, earning two walks and one hit off Betz, making it a 6-1 game.

The Seahawks sealed their win adding two insurance runs in the seventh as freshman Cara Donovan (Centreville, VA / Centreville) and senior Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) each scored to cap the 8-1 win.

Betz threw her third complete game of the year in the win, allowing one run on five hits while also striking out five.

To start game two, the Seahawks found themselves down early as the Jaspers scored one run off freshman pitcher Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot) in the bottom of the first inning.

The two teams traded scoreless hits until the top of the fifth inning when the Seahawks took the lead, scoring two runs on five hits, including another RBI double by Matteoni and a RBI single up the middle by Parker, putting the Green & White up 2-1.

Zwick and fellow freshman Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) teamed up in the circle to shutdown the Jasper's offense, holding the home team to just two hits in their final three innings, striking out seven for the one-run, 2-1, win.

The Seahawks' freshman Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA / Eleanor Roosevelt) first baseman recorded a stellar 3-for-3 day at the plate in the matinee game, adding to an outstanding first season that saw 44 total hits.

NOTE: The Seahawks will miss out on the NEC postseason tournament for the four consecutive year with their 5-15 record … For more information on the league standings, click HERE … For Wagner's end-of-the-year stats, click HERE.
