Iona Defeats Wagner 11-10 In Regular Season Double-OT Finale

Villanova, PA – In the final regular season Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match of the season, the Gaels of Iona College eluded the Seahawks in a nail-biting sudden-victory contest.  With the score set at an even 10-10 following the end of the 32 minutes of regulation play, neither team was able to capitalize in the subsequent two three-minute overtime periods.  Entering a sudden-victory situation, Iona sent home the golden-goal on a 5 meter penalty shot to secure the 11-10 win for the Gaels.

Starting the game off in a 2-2 tie after the first quarter, the Seahawks were unable to find the back of the net in the second period as the Gaels added two more.  Senior Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) sent the first Seahawk points past the Iona defense off a clean feed from classmate Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn).  Hannings then notched on a goal of her own following a clean pass from freshman Rachel Burns (Greenelane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls).

With the score set at 4-2 in favor of the Gaels at the half, Wagner entered the third period on the offensive and took a 7-6 lead as the Green & White knocked in five goals and allowed two Iona points.  After a successful 5 meter penalty shot from senior Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / WilsoN), Burns tallied her second assist of the match as the rookie found sophomore Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) open in front of the net to tie the game at 4-4.

Beck then put the Seahawks in the lead off a stellar shot following a 5 meter drawn by French.  Sophomore Kaylee Ginnane  (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA) kept the Seahawks' scoring trend active as she capitalized on a man-up opportunity drawn by Burns.  Rounding out the five-goal third period, French sent on into the back of the net to set the score at 7-6.

The final eight minutes saw three more Wagner goals as Iona notched on four to set the game in a 10-10 tie after regulation.  French hit her third goal of the day before freshman Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) tallied the Seahawks' ninth point.  Sophomore Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) tied the game at 10-10 after the Keystone State native sunk a tremendous shot from the outside corner to force the game into overtime.

The game remained locked in an even spread as neither team was able to capitalize in the following two overtime periods and the game entered a sudden-victory situation.

Following a 5 meter penalty caused by the Seahawks, the Gaels set up their 5 meter shot and hit the game winning goal securing the 11-10 win.

Junior goalkeeper Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) registered 11 blocks and four steals.

The Seahawks return to action at the MAAC Championship Tournament on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 on the campus of Marist College.  Wagner enters the Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
