Game One – Western Michigan
Game Two - Bradley
Clearwater, FL – The Wagner College softball team opened up its 17-game spring break trip, falling to Western Michigan, 2-0, before being shut out again, 2-0, by Bradley in the Seahawks' first two games of the South Florida Under Armour Invitational.
In game one against the Broncos of Western Michigan, it was freshman
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) that got the nod from head coach
Glen Payne to take the circle for her fifth collegiate start. After walking the first batter she faced, the right-handed hurler struck out the next two, and got the cleanup hitter to fly out to wrap up her first inning of work.
Wagner's bats began to heat up in the top of the second inning when a one-runner on, two-out single by junior
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker) gave the Green & White a runner in scoring position. Sophomore
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) followed suit, lacing her second hit of the young afternoon into right field, loading the bases for freshman
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood). The Broncos' first-year pitcher Becca Shemberger weathered the storm though, getting Parker to pop up to first to end the scoring threat.
The Broncos opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third after three walks by Parker followed by an error put Wagner in the hole 1-0, without giving up a hit. Another Wagner error in the bottom of the fifth inning helped the Broncos add their second run of the day. The damage could have been worse as Parker allowed just two hits while leaving the bases loaded, but found her squad down 2-0.
After the Seahawks' three-hit second inning, Shemberger allowed just one base runner the rest of the game en route to her first win of the year. Bedker ended the day striking out five in the Wagner loss.
The victory moved the Broncos to a 5-7 record, while the Seahawks remained winless at 0-6 heading into their nightcap against Bradley.
In the second game of the day, the Seahawks found themselves in a similar situation as the first, being held scoreless by the Braves of Bradley, 2-0.
Another first-year,
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot), took the circle for the start of the Seahawks second game against a Bradley team that carried a 7-9 record into the contest.
The Braves wasted no time scoring, taking advantage of a leadoff walk, which was eventually brought home two batters later on a single to right field, putting the Seahawks down 1-0 early.
Matteoni kicked off the second game much like she started the first, lacing her first hit of the game through the left side, but couldn't advance, as Mackenzie Camp shutdown the Green & White bats to keep her team in control.
Zwick allowed the game's second run in the top of the third inning when walks got her in trouble, leading to another earned run, and giving the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Matteoni would add another single to her stats in the bottom of the sixth inning, but would again be stranded on base, as Camp and the Bradley defense locked down the Seahawks bats, sealing a 2-0 victory.
The Seahawks will look to get out of their winless slump tomorrow when they take on Villanova at 9:15 a.m. before battling Eastern Tennessee at 2:00 p.m.
