Game Two Box Score
Ambler, PA – Freshman shortstop
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) extended her hit streak to an impressive 14-games, tallying one hit in each of today's contests, but the Wagner College softball team dropped both sides of the non-conference doubleheader to Temple, 3-2 and 4-0.
The two losses drop the Seahawks to 8-20 on the year, but remain a 2-2 in Northeast Conference play. Temple, out of the Atlantic 10 Conference, improves to 14-11, as the Owls lengthen their win streak to four games.
Wagner struck first in the opening game of the two-game set, as sophomore
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) blasted her team-high and career-high fourth homerun of the year, with a solo shot over the right field wall, giving the Green & White the early lead.
The Owls came right back in the bottom of the third inning, as Wagner pitcher
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) got out of a bases loaded jam, allowing just one and preventing a potential big inning for the home team.
Temple chipped away at the scoreboard, putting up one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, taking a 3-1 lead.
Wagner got one run back in the top of the sixth inning when Parker belted her second homerun of the year, with a solo knock to left center, bringing her team within one and improving her hit streak to 13 games.
Senior
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) led off the top of the seventh inning with a single to right field, but was unable to score, as Temple pitcher Brooklin White retired the next three Seahawks to seal the one-run win, 3-2.
Bedker struck out five in her eighth loss of the year, while White picked up her eighth victory.
Game two started out as a pitchers dual with both Wagner's
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot) and Temple's Capri Catalano each threw scoreless two innings, before the Owls took the freshman righty for two runs on two hits with one error.
Wagner's first hit didn't come until the top of the fifth inning when junior
Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker) hit a two-out single up the middle. Catalano retired the fourth batter of the inning to preserve the shutout. Parker kept her hit streak going in the top of the sixth inning, recording her 26
th hit of the year, but was unable to cross the plate.
Temple added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to take a commanding 4-0 lead, as Catalano and the Owls defense shutdown the Seahawks to close out the shutout win.
Wagner will get back to NEC play this weekend when the Seahawks host Sacred Heart at Wagner Field on Saturday, March 31. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
