Game One - Army
Game Two - Rider
Kissimmee, FL, - The Wagner College softball team dropped both games in their fifth day of competition at the 2012 Rebel Spring Games, losing to the Black Knights of Army, 3-5, before falling to Rider, 3-1. The two losses drop the Seahawks to 4-16 on the season, and 3-7 at the Rebel Games.
Against Rider, the Seahawks recorded three hits on the day, with freshman
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) knocking the game's first hit on an infield single.
Wagner would wait until the bottom of the fourth inning for its next hit, when a single by freshman
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge) scored Wagner's only run as junior
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) scored from second.
Huss' team-high seventh run scored wasn't enough as the Bronco's put up two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. The Bronco's hurler allowed just two hits on the day, sealing the 3-1 victory for Rider.
In the Seahawks second game, Parker again contributed in her first plate appearance, laying down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt that scored sophomore #Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena), who was on third base, giving the Seahawks the first-inning, 1-0, lead.
The Black Knights stripped the lead from the Green & White in the bottom of the second inning, jumping on sophmore pitcher
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) for five runs on five hits, to take a four-run lead into the third.
Freshman
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot) took over for Betz to start the third frame for the Wagner defense, as the hard-throwing righty pitched the final four innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Wagner's offense fought hard to get back into the game, with Parker spearheading the comeback, scoring the Seahawks second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, and belting a RBI double to rightfield in the seventh, bringing her team within two. The first-years offensive heroics weren't enough though, as Parker's three-for-three day at the plate couldn't push Wagner out of the hole, losing 5-3.
Betz was credited with her third loss of the year, going two innings and giving up five runs on six hits. The three-hit game for Parker marks her second three-hit performance of the year, as the Evergreen State native is now on a six-game hit streak.
Wagner closes out its 17-game spring break time tomorrow when they take on Howard University in a double header beginning at 9:00 a.m.
