Game One – Bucknell
Game Two – Lafayette
Kissimmee, FL – The Seahawks softball team captured back-to-back wins for the first time this year today, knocking off Patriot League opponents Bucknell, 5-0, and Lafayette, 3-2, in day four of competition at the 2012 Rebel Spring Games. The wins move the Green & White to 4-14 on the season, and 3-5 at the Rebel Games.
In game one, head coach
Glen Payne elected to go with junior
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) in the circle, coming off her second win of the year in the previous contest. The right-handed hurler picked up right where she left off; retiring the first ten batters before allowing Bucknell's first hit in the top of the fourth.
While Betz was controlling the defense, the Seahawks offense got a spark from senior
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy), who belted her first homerun of the year in the bottom of the second, scoring
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek), giving Wagner the early 2-0 lead.
A pair of freshman gave the Green & White their third run, as
Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA / Eleanor Roosevelt) laced a RBI double down the left field line, which scored
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood), who was on board on an infield single.
Albarran would give the Seahawks a couple more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when she belted a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring both Parker and
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena), and putting Wagner up 5-0.
Betz continued to dominate on the rubber, throwing a complete game, three-hitter, allowing no runs and no walks in the Seahawks 5-0 victory.
The Seahawks kept their momentum rolling into game two against Lafayette, as Wagner tallied all three of its runs in the top of the first inning, despite not recording a hit. Wagner took advantage of two errors, two passed balls, a hit batter, and a wild pitch, to jump out to an early 3-0 lead to start the game.
The Wagner defense, led by freshman pitcher
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot) controlled the Leopards offensive efforts, allowing just three hits, and striking out six, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lafayette kept fighting in their last at bats though, determined to stay alive. With one runner on and two outs, the Leopards got back-to-back hits from Kristen Berger and Jordan Parsons, scoring two and putting the tying run on base.
Zwick got herself out of the two-out jam, striking out Victoria Vergona to cap off the 3-2 win.
The win marks Zwick's second victory in five starts, as the Canadian native ended the outing striking out eight, and giving up just five hits.
Wagner will be back in action tomorrow, taking on Army and Rider in more Rebel Games Action. The Seahawks first matchup against the Black Knights is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
