Game One - Cleveland State
Game Two - Wisconsin - Green Bay
Kissimmee, FL – The Wagner College softball team snapped its four-game losing skid today, knocking off Cleveland State, 9-1 in five innings, before falling to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, 3-2 in extra innings in game two.
With the split, the Seahawks move to 2-14 on the year, recording their first win at the 2012 Rebel Spring Games. The squad is now 1-5 at the Spring Games, with six more games to play.
The day got started against Cleveland State, where the Wagner bats burst to life, putting up nine runs on the Vikings, including four in the top of the first inning. A single by freshman
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) followed by extra base hits from
Jessica Albarran (Corona, CA / Eleanor Roosevelt) and
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) contributed to the Seahawks early lead, going up 4-0 to start the contest.
The Vikings put up their only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning, getting to junior pitcher
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) for a single run on two hits, bringing the score to 4-1 going into the second.
Sophomore
Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, VA / Fairfax) gave the Seahawks a commanding lead in the top of the fifth inning when she blasted her first homerun of the year, a three-run shot, scoring Albarran and
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek), and putting the Green & White up, 7-1.
The Seahawks would add two more insurance runs in their next plate appearances, as sophomore
MacKenzie Alfaro (Riverside, CA / Riverside) provide the lone hit of the inning, but pinch runner
Cara Donovan (Centreville, VA / Centreville) and
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) ended up scoring in the frame to seal the dominating 9-1 victory.
The win marked the second time this season that the Green & White have defeated Cleveland State, as Wagner's only two wins so far this year have come at the expense of the Vikings. Betz was credited with her first win of the year, throwing a complete six-inning game, giving up eight hits, and striking out one.
In game two of the day, the Phoenix of Green Bay took the Seahawks into extra innings, after seven innings couldn't decide a victor.
The Phoenix got on the board first, posting two runs in the top of the third inning to take the early lead. Wagner fought its way back in the bottom of the fifth frame after Parker laced a two-run double into the outfield, scoring Matteoni and
Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ / Sunrise Mountain) and evening the score at two apiece.
Both hurlers threw steady contests, as neither team was able to break the tie through seven regulation innings, taking the game into the top of the eighth.
With the international run rule in effect, the Vikings placed Amanda Omahen on second base to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze, the Seahawks found themselves down 3-2 going into their at bats in the bottom half of the frame.
With Matteoni placed on second to begin, the Seahawks were unable to find an answer, as the second-year infielder was stranded on second base while Wagner produced no hits, thus ending the game, 3-2, with the one-run loss.
With six games remaining in their spring break Florida trip, the Seahawks will look to keep some momentum heading into tomorrow when they take on Patriot League contenders Bucknell and Lafayette. The first game against the Bison is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
