Tampa, FL - The Wagner College softball team snapped its nine-game losing streak defeating Cleveland State, 3-2, in the final game of the Universtiy of South Florida Invitational. The win gives the Seahawks their first victory of the year, moving to 1-9, while the Vikings fell to 2-16.
After trading hits in the first few innings, the Vikings scored first, bringing one run home on three hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Wagner's bats began to come alive in the fourth though, as sophomore
Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ / Sunrise Mountain) led off the inning reaching on an infield error. Freshman
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) advanced her Rauscher to second on a well executed sacrifice, bringing the speedy second-year into scoring position. Two batters later, junior
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) notched her first RBI of the year, with a double, evening the game at one apiece. Huss would score on the very next at bat, as a single by sophomore
Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, VA / Fairfax) gave Wagner its first lead of the day, 2-1.
The Seahawks were hitless for the next two innings, before adding their third run in the top of the seventh. Sophomore
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) increased her hit streak to five games with a one-out single, and later scored on a Vikings passed ball, giving the Green & White the 3-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Olivia Zwick (Surrey, Canada / Earl Marriot), who came in for relief of classmate
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) in the bottom of the fourth, allowed three hits and one run in the seventh inning, but stranded the Vikings with the bases loaded to seal the Seahawks first win of the year, 3-2.
Bedker and Zwick threw a solid outing, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in the full seven-inning game. Zwick was credited with her first collegiate win, moving to 1-2 on the year.
Wagner will continue its 10-day spring trip tomorrow, when they head to Kissimmee, FL, for 12 contests at the Rebel Games. The Seahawks face Akron and Columbia on day one, with first pitch against the Zips slated for 11:00 a.m.
