Robert Morris Defeats Wagner Women 55-38 In Defensive Tussle

Artemis Spanou and Briannica Tye tallied 18 and 16 points, respectively, to the lead the Robert Morris women's basketball team to a 55-38 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Wagner at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
Wagner out-shot Robert Morris 35 percent to 29 percent from the field and caused 25 Colonial turnovers. But Robert Morris held a 32-13 edge in points off turnovers as the Seahawks were guilty committing of a season-high 32 on the afternoon.
 
Both teams struggled on the offensive end in the first half, with Robert Morris out-shooting Wagner 29-27 percent but the Colonials caused 19 Wagner first-half turnovers which they converted into 22 points en route to seizing a 26-13 halftime lead. At the half, Robert Morris held a sizeable 22-2 edge in points off turnovers.
 
A layup by senior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose) made it a 6-5 game with 15:28 left before Robert Morris embarked on a 14-2 run over the next 6:37 in building a 20-7 lead with 8:48 to go in the half. During the stretch, Wagner committed eight turnovers while shooting 1-of-5 from the field. Junior forward Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) paced the Seahawks with five first-half points while Clark added four.
 
Robert Morris opened the second half with a 7-0 run to open its biggest lead of 20 at 33-13 at the 18:17 mark. The Colonials remained in control at 40-22 with 11:01 left on a Mary Durojaye free throw. Over the 5:28, Wagner played its best basketball of the day, going on a 10-2 run to draw within 10 points at 42-32 on a Clark layup with 5:33 left.
 
The run began with a layup by freshman forward Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) followed by a jumper by redshirt junior guard Kanifa Hicks (Paterson, NJ/ Passaic Tech) that made it 40-26 with 9:55 left. Clark then scored the next six points for Wagner to make it a 10-point game. The Seahawks were still within 10 at 46-36 following a Blais layup at 2:37 but Tye countered with a three-pointer at 2:07 to push the lead to 13 en route to the 17-point win.
 
Clark paced the Seahawks with 14 points to go with six rebounds while Blais continued her fine play with nine points. In the last four games, the 6-2 Blais is averaging 8.7 points, highlighted by a career-high 14 at Quinnipiac on January 28.  
 
With the win, the Colonials improve to 12-11 on the season, 6-5 in the NEC. Wagner is now 2-20 on the year, 1-10 in league play. The Seahawks have dropped 15 straight games.
 
Wagner is next in action on Monday night when the Seahawks play host to Saint Francis (PA). Tip-off between the Seahawks and the Red Flash is set for 7:00 pm.
 
NOTES - Prior to today's Wagner-Robert Morris game, Clark was honored with a commemorative basketball and a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her reaching the 1,000-point plateau. On January 28 at Quinnipiac, Clark became the 22nd player in Seahawk history to join the 1,000-point club. Clark was accompanied in the pre-game ceremony by her parents, Barbara and Mark.
