Mount St. Mary’s Rides Late Three-Pointers To 68-60 Come-From-Behind Win To Stymie Wagner Effort

FINAL STATS

Emmitsburg, MD –
Behind a season-high 25 points and 11 rebounds from senior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose), Wagner turned in a gallant, spirited effort and led for much of the game before Mount St. Mary's hit four huge three-pointers down the stretch in pulling out a 68-60 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory.

A Clark layup with 4:23 left in the first half broke a 16-16 tie and jump-started a 10-5 run that closed the half and allowed the Seahawks to take a 26-21 lead at the break. Wagner continued to compete effectively deep into the second half. After taking a 32-27 lead on a layup by junior forward Marie-Laurence Archambault  (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency), the Mountaineers went on a 9-4 burst to tie the game at 36-36 five minutes into the second half.

Archambault then broke loose for seven consecutive Seahawk points as Wagner pushed its lead back to five at 43-38 with 12:47 left. After the game was tied at 45-45 and 47-47, consecutive layups by senior forward Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz) and Clark put Wagner up 51-47 with 8:39 left. Following a stretch where both teams endured a 90-second dry spell, Ashley Christie scored five straight for The Mount. At 6:58, Christie hit a layup and then followed with the first late-game dagger, a three-pointer from the left wing that put the Mountaineers up 53-51 with 6:29 to go.

A Clark layup, followed by two Robinson free throws put the Seahawks back in front 55-53 with 5:25 left. After Kayla Grossett made one of two free throws for The Mount, Clark answered by making one of two from the line as well, leaving the Seahawks with a 56-54 lead. This would prove to be Wagner's last lead of the game as Kelly Guerriero came off the bench to delivere dagger number two, a deep three with 4:03 left which gave The Mount the lead for good at 57-56.

After Clark missed a jumper, the Mountaineers worked the ball around the perimeter until it found Guerriero, who calmly swished another three-pointer at the 3:18 mark to make it a 60-56 game. Clark would draw Wagner to within two at 60-58 before Christie rejoined the act, knocking down a three-pointer with 1:28 left to push it back to a five-point game at 63-58. This trifecta marked the fourth for the Mountaineers in a span of 4:53 as the Mountaineers, aided by tree made free throws, went on to post the 68-60 win.

While Clark's 25-point outing came on 10 first-half points and 15 in the second half, she was supported in the first half by freshman point guard Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy) who scored eight of her 10 points in the opening stanza. Archambault then got hot in the second half, scoring nine of her 12 points during the final 20 minutes, highlighted by that seven-point burst.

For Clark it was her eighth double-double of the season and 12th of her career. It also marked the eighth time this season and 12th in her career that she has topped the 20-point mark. Robinson played a passionate game in the post, pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds, many of them in traffic. The 6-0 Robinson also added seven points.

For Mount St. Mary's, Christie led three players in double digits with 18 points while Selina Mann and Jessie Kaufman added 14 and 10 points, respectively. Wagner out-shot The Mount 40 percent to 33 percent and held a healthy 43-35 edge in the rebounding department. But The Mount made five more three-pointers (7-of-16 vs. 2-of-9) and a nine-point edge in made free throws (21-of-28 vs. 12-of-17). Mount St. Mary's also greatly helped its cause by committing just nine turnovers while the Seahawks turned the ball over 20 times.

In dropping their 18th straight game, Wagner falls to 2-22 on the season, 1-13 in the NEC while Mount St. Mary's improves to 11-14 on the season, 7-7 in league play.
