Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College swimming & diving team dropped its first Northeast Conference (NEC) meet of the season today, falling to rival Central Connecticut State, 184.5 – 113.5, at Wagner Pool.
The loss marks the first NEC defeat Wagner has faced since January 29, 2011, when the Blue Devils knocked off the Green & White in New Britian, CT. Wagner moves to 7-4 overall, and 4-1 in the conference, as they break from competition before heading to the NEC Championships on February 23.
After being held from the top spot in the opening two events, sophomore
Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ / West Windsor-Plainsboro) got the Seahawks their first gold, taking the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.53.
Back-to-back third place finishes by senior
Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) and sophomore
Kelsey Thomas (Hammonton, NJ / Holy Spirit) kept the Seahawks within striking distance, before junior
Tatum Colitz (Wyomissing, PA / Wilson) picked up a silver in the 200 yard butterfly.
Freshman
Lynn Tay (Elk Grove, CA / Bradshaw Christian) and sophomore
Sarah Menendez (Land O'Lakes, FL / Wharton) earned second and third place points, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle sprint, with the first year missing out on the top spot by .31 seconds. Menendez was just .03 seconds back, as she tied CCSU's Alex Czaplicki to split the third place points.
Ketchmark picked up her second gold of the day in the 100 freestyle, finishing the heat in 53.59, while Menendez earned a third place finish with a time of 54.67.
Sweeney and freshman
Morgan Stoner (Greensburg, PA / Hempfield Area Senior) combined for seven points in the 200 backstroke, as the senior co-captain took second place in 2:11.01, with Stoner trailing just behind with a time of 2:12.53.
Sophomore
Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY / Minisink Valley) added a second place finish to Seahawks totals in the 500 yard freestyle, ending in 5:13.80.
Junior
Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) and Thomas wrapped up the day for the Seahawks individual swimmers, with Gibbons adding third place points in the 100 yard butterfly, and Thomas taking third place finishes in the 200 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard individual medley.
The final event of the day belonged to the Wagner relay team, as the group of Tay, Menendez, Ketchmark and
Samantha sides (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) coasted to a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.04.
While the swimmers were competing on campus, the Seahawks diving team was also taking on a talented Blue Devils diving group off-site. The freshman tandem of
Mallory Lee (Newark, CA / Moreau Catholic) and
Marikate Villano (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) dove to solid marks, picking up 14 points for their squad. Once again, Lee led the Seahawks on both the one and three meter boards, scoring a 212.40 on the one and a 211.42 on the three, but was edged out of the top spot by last year's NEC Outstanding Diver Madison Vestergaard, who won both boards on the day.
