Seahawks Earn 1-1 Draw With Manhattan

Box Score

Staten Island, NY –
Freshman goalkeeper Lisa Capelli (Manalapan, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) recorded eight saves in her first collegiate start for the Seahawks, as the women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Manhattan today at Wagner Stadium.

The Jaspers got on the board first, when Martine Diamond picked up a loose ball in the box and slotted a shot past a diving Capelli to record her first goal of the year, and give Manhattan an early 1-0 lead.

Wagner's relentless pressure paid off just four minutes later after Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) received a centering pass from fellow forward Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) just inside the 18-yard box. The second-year striker wasted no time on her bid at goal, poking a right-footed shot past Manhattan goalie Kara Davis and into the side netting to tie the game at one apiece.

An evenly matched first half, the Seahawks held the slight statistical advantage, outshooting Manhattan 8-6, with Capelli making four saves to keep the game knotted up at ones going into the break.

The second half saw plenty of shots, with the Jaspers leading the way 7-6. Neither team could muster up anything of great danger though, as both Capelli and Davis made just two saves in the final 45 minutes of regulation.

Capelli was called upon to make two crucial saves in the first overtime session, denying both Megan Lavecchia and Janie Schlauder of potential game winners.

The physical battled continued into the final overtime period, but was with little offense, as each team recorded a shot apiece, but was unable to seal a win.

With the tie, Wagner moves to 5-1-2, and the Jaspers to 1-4-1. The Seahawks will kick of Northeast Conference play next weekend when they travel to Bryant on Friday, September 23, for a 3:30 start.
