Staten Island, NY – Senior
Kaitlyn Llewellyn (Island Lake, IL / Wauconda) scored her first goal of the year in the 87th minute to give the Seahawks' women's soccer team a 2-1 win over NJIT today at Wagner College Stadium. With the victory, the Green & White move to 3-0 for the first time in the 18-year history of the program.
The Green & White struck first midway through the opening frame when Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) received a pass down the left flank. The second-year forward wasted little time before launching a thru-ball over the Highlanders backline to fellow forward Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) who was streaking through the midfield. The speedy forward took one touch to loft the ball over the keeper before burying it in the back of the net for her second goal in as many games.
With the Wagner offense bearing down on the Highlanders, sophomore Anna Kornmuller was forced to make some key saves to keep her team in striking distance. Heading into the halftime break, Wagner led all offensive categories, outshooting the Highlanders 6-0, and earning four corner kick opportunities.
Poised to stay alive, NJIT fought back in opening minutes of the second half when Gechi Ukaegbu took a long pass from Cielianna Pasiciel that split the Seahawks defense. Ukaegbu touched the ball around Wagner keeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) and slotted it into the net to even the game at one apiece. The NJIT tally marked the first goal Marcy has given up this year.
Wagner's relentless pressure on the Highlanders defense translated into its eventual game-winner, as Alyssa Azzinaro (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) came on late to add speed to Seahawks attack. With the clock dwindling down, the first-year forward got off a hard shot, forcing Kornmuller to make a diving save. The rebound however, was picked up on the far post by Llewellyn who had no problems knocking the ball into the open net to seal the Wagner win. The goal marked Llewellyn's first of the season and third of her collegiate career.
Wagner ended the contest outshooting the Highlanders 11-6, as Marcy made one save to collect her third win of the year.
The Seahawks will take to the field again on Friday, September 2, when they travel to Howard University to take on the Bison in a re-scheduled non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
