Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At NEC Championships

The Wagner College women's golf team wrapped up its 2011 season finishing fifth at the Northeast Conference (NEC) championships this weekend contested at the LPGA International in Daytona, FL.

Sophomore Miko Page (Brooklyn, NY / Edward R. Murrow) led all Seahawks over the three day tournament, shooting a plus-six 78 on the first and last day, mixing in an 84 in the second round for a three-day score of 240. Her plus-24 championship score placed her in ninth at the conclusion of the weekend, making her the first Seahawk women's golfer to finish in the top 10 at the NEC Championships .in more than five years.

Freshman Ellen Huffman (Lima, OH / Lima Central Catholic) finished just four shots behind Page, firing rounds of 83-75-86, for a plus-28 and a tie for 11th place in her first conference championship tournament. Huffman's second round score of 75 was the team's lowest score of the tournament and tied for the third lowest score of the day.

The senior tandem of Dena Smith (Highland Heights, OH / Beaumont) and Allison Amador (Middle Island, NY / Longwood) finished third and fourth for the Seahawks, respectively. Smith posted three straight rounds in the 80's with scores of 87-84-84 for a plus-39, 255, and a tie for 23rd place. Just five strokes behind Smith was classmate, Amador, who shot rounds of 86-82-92, for a 260, good for a 28th place finish.

Sophomore Keri Muse's (Sterling, VA / Dominion) three-day total of 265 (92-86-87) rounded out the five-player travel team for the Seahawks, who finished with a combined team score of 994.

Wagner's overall plus-130 was just two strokes shy of the fourth place finishers from St. Francis (PA), and seven shots behind Robert Morris, who took third place at the event. Fairleigh Dickinson won their fourth straight conference championship with a team score of 941, with Sacred Heart coming in second.

NOTE: Wagner head coach Christopher Fourman was named the NEC's Coach of the Year for leading the Seahawks to their fifth place finish, improving from a ninth place finish in 2010.
