Game Two Box Score
Staten Island, NY – After dropping the day's first game, 9-1, the Wagner College softball team battled back to knock off the Yale Bulldogs, 7-4, in the nightcap of today's non-conference doubleheader at Wagner Field.
The Seahawks wasted no time getting on the board in game two, as a two-out, two-RBI single by Laura Hennig (Dyer, IN / Munster) drove in Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress) and Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV / Galena) to give the home team an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wagner wasn't done with its scoring in the opening frame, earning back-to-back walks off Yale pitcher Alex Lucas, that brought home Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / Cal. State University), and put the Seahawks up 3-0.
Both Lucas and Garcia, who started in the circle for the Seahawks, settled down after the first inning, allowing only two hits combined until the bottom of the fifth.
Wagner widened its lead in the bottom half of the fifth, after a two-run homer by freshman Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, VA / Fairfax) extended the Seahawks lead to 5-0. Rollins' bomb over the left centerfield fence was her first collegiate homerun. The shot scored Hennig, who reached base on her second hit of the game, recording her third multi-hit game of the season.
The Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game in the top of the sixth inning, tallying two runs on three hits and a Wagner error to close the gap to 5-2.
The Seahawks matched their opponents' two runs in the bottom half of the inning, when Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) led off with her 22nd hit of the year, and was driven home on Garcia's team-leading fifth double of the season. Garcia would score two batters later on a Bulldog error, keeping Wagner in the driver's seat, 7-2.
A two-run home run by Meg Johnson in the top of the seventh inning brought the Bulldogs to within three, but Garcia got the next three outs of the inning to close out the 7-4 Wagner win.
Garcia earned her second win of the season and her fourth complete game, while Lucas was credited with her first loss of the year for the Bulldogs.
Wagner took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one when Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek).
Nicoletti's lone run was the last mark the Green & White would score until game two, as a six-run third inning, and a three-run fifth for the Bulldogs, gave the visitors a 9-1, five-inning victory.
Yale's Jackie Manzer was credited with the win for the Bulldogs, allowing just one run on two hits through four innings. Lucas came in to pitch the fifth frame, giving up just one hit to Nicoletti before closing out the affair.
Rollins gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs, while absorbing her fourth loss of the year, for the Seahawks who moved to 8-24 on the year with the two-game split. The split brought Yale's record to 15-19.
Wagner will swing back into Northeast Conference action tomorrow when the team travels just over the Verraazano Bridge to Brooklyn to take on Long Island University in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 pm.
