West Long Branch, NJ– Five different Seahawks scored goals but it was not enough as Monmouth overcame a 6-3 deficit in posting a 14-7 victory in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 2-7 on the season, 1-1 in the NEC while the Hawks improve to 7-3, 2-1 in league play.
After Monmouth took an early 2-0 lead, the Seahawks received goals by freshman attack
Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) and sophomore attack Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) to tie the game at 2-2. The Hawks went on top 3-2 with a goal by Sam Lillo and the Seahawks responded with four unanswered goals in taking the 6-3 lead.
Morin started the 4-0 run with a goal at the 19:14 mark of the first half. Morin's goal was followed by goals by junior defender
Denieda McCullough (Freeport, NY/ Freeport), junior midfielder
Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) and Clark, the latter goal coming with 10:05 to go in the half. Monmouth countered with three straight tallies to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime.
The Hawks continued the momentum following intermission, notching the first two goals of the second half to make it a 5-0 run in building an 8-6 lead. Wagner briefly quelled the Hawk onslaught with a Clark goal with 21:57 remaining in the game, but Monmouth erupted for six consecutive goals in fashioning the final score at 14-7.
Clark paced Wagner with two goals, six draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. The Hawk defense, however, hounded her into a 2-for-10 shooting day. Also scoring two goals for the Seahawks was Morin while Garces, O'Connor and McCullough wound up with one goal apiece. Junior midfielder

Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) recorded eight saves for Wagner.
Monmouth was led by Rachel Fierstein's four goals and one assist while Erica Abendschoen added three goals. Kirby Mondorf came up with seven saves in goal for the Hawks.
Statistically, the game was closer than the final score might indicate as Monmouth held narrow margins in shots (25-23), ground balls (23-20) and draw controls (14-10). Monmouth was 1-of-4 on free position shots while the Seahawks were 2-of-9 on FPO's.
Wagner is next in action on Sunday, April 3 when the Seahawks make the long trek to Emmitsburg, MD to meet Mount St. Mary's. Opening draw is set for 3:00 p.m.
