Bryant Defeats Wagner In Two NEC Games

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

Smithfield, RI –
In Sunday's doubleheader at Bryant University, the Wagner College softball team was defeated by the Bulldogs in both games, 26-0 and 11-3.

After Samantha Houseal retired the first three Seahawks of the day, sophomore Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA) took the circle for the bottom of the first. Betz, who was called for a number of illegal pitches, gave up four earned runs in the fist inning before giving way to freshman Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, VA/ Fairfax) who pitched the remainder of the game.

With the Bulldogs winning 26-0 after five innings, the mercy rule was activated.

With just a quick break after the conclusion of the first game, the two teams readied for the back end of the doubleheader featuring Wagner's Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA) and the Bulldogs Brittany Hart who got the nod for each team.

The Bryant bats didn't slow down in game two as the Bulldogs bringing in three runs on three hits and one error, including a three-run homerun by freshman Kendall Corder.

Garcia helped her own cause leading off the bottom of a second with the Seahawks first hit of the day, but Hart managed to set down the next three Wagner hitters to end the inning keeping her Bulldogs up 3-0.

Wagner tied the game up in their next plate appearances with Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV) laying down a bunt single, before Kristen Matteoni's  (Reno, NV) blast double to right field, that put the two into scoring position. Two batters later, MacKenzie Alfaro (Riverside, CA) knocked a shot to centerfield that the fielder couldn't corral, scoring Corthell and Matteoni. Alfaro, herself, scored on another error by the Bulldogs when Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ) put solid contact on a ball that hit off the centerfielders glove, tying the game at three apiece.

Huss's run would be the last of the day for the Seahawks as Bryant relentlessly put up eight more runs in the next two innings on eight hits and one Wagner error, bringing the eight-run mercy rule into effect, sealing the 11-3 victory in five innings of play.

Garcia was credited with her fifth loss of the sea son for the Seahawks who fell to 1-16 on the season, and 0-4 in Northeast Conference play. With the win, Bryant moves to 10-11 and a perfect 4-0 in the NEC.

Wagner will take to field in its home opener this Thursday, March 31, when the Jaspers of Manhattan come to Grymes Hill for a 3:00 p.m. start.

NOTES -Head coach Glen Payne and assistant coach Butch Pepe were both ejected from game one after arguing with the umpires regarding a host of illegal pitchers that were called on the Seahawks.  Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY) recorded her first hit of the season in the fourth inning of game two on a single to left centerfield. Alyssa McCulloch (East Brunswick, NJ) also notched a hit on the day, tallying her fifth of the year.
