Final Results
Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner women's swimming team edged out Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, 146-106, to improve to 2-0 in dual competition on the year, while the Mountaineers remain winless at 0-2.
The Seahawks began the day with a first place finish from their 200 medley relay team, as the group of
Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy),
Kelsey Thomas (Hammonton, NJ / Holy Spirit),
Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ / West Windsor-Plainsboro) and
Lynn Tay (Elk Grove, CA / Bradshaw Christian) bested the Mount's top team by nearly two seconds. Ketchmark also claimed first place in the 200 freestlye.
Sophomore
Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY / Minisink Valley) followed up the relay team with her first individual victory on the day, taking the 800 freestyle in 9:13.63. Senior
Mary Courtney Ryan (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph Hill Academy) and freshman
Amanda Saber (Morgan Hill, CA / Archbishop Mitty) joined Cooney on the podium, as Ryan finished second in a time of 9:47.40, and Saber in third with 9:51.80.
Just five events later, Cooney would wrap up her individual contests, finishing first in back-to-back events, taking the 50 freestyle in 28.39, before winning the 100 free in 1:00.74. The Seahawks swept both events though, with Tay and
Sarah Menendez (Land O'Lakes, FL / Wharton) finishing second and third in the 50, and Menendez and Thomas taking silver and bronze in the 100.
Thomas, yet again, owned the 100 breaststroke event, setting a Mount St. Mary's Pool record with a time of 1:16.87. Freshman
Morgan Stoner (Greensburg, PA / Hempfield Area Senior) and sophomore
Kristen Lee (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) took second and third, respectively.
Stoner also earned gold in the 200 breaststroke, edging out teammate
Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) in a time of 2:52.84. Fellow Staten Islander,
Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) earned her first individual victory of the year, claiming gold in the 100 butterfly by just .05 seconds.
The Seahawks will be back in the pool on Saturday, October 29, when they travel to New Rochelle, NY, for a quad meet against Iona, Saint Francis (NY), and Seton Hall.
