Riverdale, NY- The Wagner College softball team took one of two games in its twin bill against Manhattan College this afternoon at the Jaspers' Gaelic Park. Led by a dominant two-hit shutout performance from freshman
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run), the Seahawks defeated Manhattan 1-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Green & White then dropped a hard-fought contest 2-1 in the nightcap. With the split, the Seahawks move to 8-21 (3-3NEC) on the season.
In game one, the lone run of the game came via senior
Kate Eshelman's (Reno, NV / McQueen) RBI single to the shortstop in the first inning, plating sophomore
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno), who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Through the remainder of the contest Betz and the Seahawk defense held the Jaspers scoreless. Betz earned her fourth win of the season after pitching a complete game while striking out three batters and allowing just two hits.
In game two, the Green & White fell by a close 2-1 count in the seventh inning on a walk-off home run.
Manhattan opened up the scoring late in the fourth inning, scoring on a Wagner miscue. This lead was short lived as the Seahawks responded in the top of the fifth frame with a game-tying RBI double to right field by junior
Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls). Scoring on the play was freshman
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek), who had reached on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Jaspers produced the game winning run off a home run to left center by Kristina Walraven.
In the circle, freshman
Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) took the loss through 6.2 innings of action. DeBinder fanned three Jaspers while allowing five hits.
Wagner returns to action Saturday, April 10th when the Seahawks travel to Emmitsburg, MD to face Northeast Conference competitor Mount Saint Mary's University in a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM.
