Wagner Softball Drops Doubleheader at Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT- The Wagner College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to Quinnipiac University, 4-3, 7-1, this afternoon at the Quinnipiac Softball Field. The Seahawks held a lead in each contest, but both times were upended by a Quinnipiac comeback. 

Wagner took control of the opener in the top of the first inning when sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) drove in freshman Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia) (reached by base on balls) on a double. 

The Seahawks extended their lead to 3-0 on freshman Alyssa McCulloch's (East Brunswick, NJ/ East Brunswick) two-run home run to left field, plating sophomore Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) (reached by base on balls). The Green & White held on to this lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Bobcats rallied back, scoring three runs off a sacrifice fly and a pair of run-scoring singles. 

Quinnipiac tacked on its final run in the seventh, taking the 4-3 victory off a RBI single to center field. 

In the circle, freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) took the loss through 6.2 innings of action. 

In the nightcap, the Seahawks took an early lead in the first inning on Garcia's RBI single up the middle, scoring Fauria (reached on a single to left). This lead held until the bottom of the second frame when the Bobcats took control of the contest by scoring runs on a RBI single and a ground out to shortstop. 

Quinnipiac extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third after scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Bobcats then added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run double and a pair of run-scoring singles. This lead held through the remainder of the contest as the Bobcats earned the win 7-1. 

Freshman Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) garnered the loss through 3.0 innings of work. 

Wagner returns to action tomorrow, Sunday April 25th when the Seahawks host Sacred Heart University in a Northeast Conference doubleheader at 12:00PM.
