San Diego State Sweeps Doubleheader From Wagner With 12-1 Win

San Diego State completed a doubleheader sweep of Wagner with a 12-1 victory in the second game of the day at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open what was a one-run game in improving to 20-20 on the year while the Seahawks fall to 16-18.

The Green & White, which dropped game one by a 7-2 count, will look to pick up a win in the series-finale tomorrow at 1:00 pm (EST). Live audio, video and stats can be found on the San Diego State website and accessed via the Wagner schedule/results page.

Junior RHP Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) was solid on the mound for Wagner, yielding four runs, just one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts in falling to 2-5.

SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Mitch Blackburn RBI double. Van Spronsen evaded further damage over the next three frames before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Aztecs took advantage of a Seahawks miscue, plating three unearned runs to break open a close game and take a 4-0 lead.

SDSU added eight runs over the next three innings en route to a 12-1 victory.

Senior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) manufactured the lone Wagner run in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, the speedy centerfielder singled before stealing second on a failed pick-off attempt. Junior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) followed with a double to left center, plating Csakai.

Freshman RHP Corey Black (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory, striking out nine while scattering three hits and two walks over 7.1 scoreless innings.

Brandon Meredith and Jordan Van Hoosier each went 3-for-4, leading a 15-hit Aztec attack.

Junior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) was the lone Seahawks with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a double. He went 4-for-7 with two doubles in today's doubleheader and is batting .400 (4-10) on the weekend.
