Garcia Fuels Seahawks Sweep Of Fairleigh Dickinson With Six RBI; 10-9, 5-4

Hackensack, NJ- The Wagner College softball team garnered a pair of one-run victories this afternoon against Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) at the FDU Softball Field. In game one of the twin bill, a six-run fifth inning fueled the Seahawks past the Knights en route to a 10-9 victory before coming out on top in the nightcap, 5-4.

On the day, sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) paced the Seahawks going 6-8 with six RBIs and three runs scored.

FDU struck for five first-inning runs to take a 5-0 lead in the opener before the Green & White assumed the lead in the top of the fifth with a six-run rally to take a 7-5 lead. Wagner would add three more runs to its lead while holding off a late-charging Knight squad for the 10-9 victory.

FDU jumped out to a five run lead in the first on a pair of singles and a double.

Junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) got the Seahawks on the board in the third, scoring on a fielder's choice.

The contest remained at 5-1 until Wagner took its first lead on a pair of run-scoring singles, a three-run home run and a FDU fielding error in the fifth. Freshman Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) got the inning started with a RBI single to left field, scoring senior Kate Eshelman () (reached by a base on balls). Garcia followed with a three-run home run to tie the game at 5-5 while also plating Huss and Eshelman. After reaching on a bunt, junior Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) gave the Green & White the lead for the first time when she scored on a fielding error by the FDU center fielder. Sophomore Laura Hennig (Dyer IN / Munster HS) capped off the pivotal inning with a RBI single up the middle, driving in sophomore Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS), who reached on a double to left center.

The Knights answered back in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on a double to right field, tying the game at 7-7.

In the top of the sixth, the Seahawks responded with three runs on a single and two-run double. Garcia gave Wagner the lead once again on a single to centerfield, plating Eshelman, who reached on a throwing error. Lenart added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double to right field, scoring Garcia and Huss, who had previously walked.

In the bottom of the inning, FDU scored a pair of runs on a two-run double but ultimately fell short as the Green & White claimed a 10-9 victory.

Freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) earned her sixth win of the season, pitching 4.2 innings while senior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) hurled for 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Seahawks notched a 5-4 victory to take the sweep.

Wagner jumped out to a two run lead in the second on a pair of singles. Junior Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) got the Seahawks on board with a RBI base hit down the right-field line, scoring Garcia, who reached on a double. Freshman Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) extended the Green & White's lead to 2-0 on a single to centerfield, plating freshman Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker), who had doubled earlier in the frame.

In the bottom of the third, FDU took a two-run lead, scoring four runs on three hits and a Wagner miscue, cutting it to 4-2.

Pinch-runner freshman Andrea Carini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe) cut the Knights lead to one in the fourth inning, scoring on a FDU error.

Garcia tied the game at 4-4, in the fifth on a RBI double down the left field line, scoring Pierce, who earlier singled.

In the seventh inning, Garcia again brought around Pierce, driving in the winning run on a RBI single up the middle, giving the Green & White a come-from-behind 5-4 win.

In the circle, Garcia earned her second win of the season through 4.1 innings of relief pitching.

Wagner returns to action Wednesday, April 21 when the Seahawks host Yale University in a doubleheader at 3:00PM.
