West Long Branch, NJ- The Wagner College softball team split its Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader with current league leader Monmouth University this afternoon, falling in the opener 4-3 and taking the win in the nightcap 1-0 at the MU Softball Park. With the split, the Seahawks move to 10-23 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.
In the second game of the twinbill, sophomore
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) earned her first win of the season in a pitcher's duel, blanking the Hawks by a 1-0 count. Garcia pitched a complete game while allowing just four hits and fanning three.
The Seahawks scored the game's only run in the top of the first frame when freshman
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) drove in freshman
Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia), who reached on a single down the left field line, with a two-out single to the shortstop.
At the plate, Fauria led the Seahawks with three hits and a run scored while Huss went 2-2 with the game-winning RBI.
In game one, MU's late rally pulled the Hawks over the Seahawks in a hard-fought 4-3 battle.
Following two scoreless innings, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run single to center field.
The Seahawks responded in the top of the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead off a MU fielding error and a two-run double. Fauria, who reached on a single up the middle, cut the Hawks lead in half when she scored on a fielding error by MU's left fielder. Junior
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) then brought the Green & White ahead with a two-run double to right field, plating senior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) (reached on a fielding error by the second baseman) and Huss (reached on a fielding error by the left fielder).
In the bottom of the sixth, MU tied the game at 3-3 on a single to left field. The Hawks then took the win in the bottom of the seventh, with bases loaded, when MU's Alexa Ferrara was hit by a pitch.
Freshman
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) (5-7) took the loss through 6.2 innings of action. Betz fanned two and allowed three earned runs.
Wagner returns to action Tuesday, April 13th when the Seahawks host Temple University in a doubleheader at 3:00PM.
