Wagner Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mount Saint Mary’s

Emmitsburg, MD- The Wagner College softball team split a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader with Mount Saint Mary's University this afternoon at The Mount's Meadows Field. The Seahawks took the first game, 8-4, with a decisive five-run sixth inning before falling in game two 6-0. The split moves Wagner to 9-22 (4-4 NEC) on the season. 

For the day, freshman Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker) paced the Seahawks with six hits, three RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) added four hits and two runs scored. 

After trailing by one run in the opener, the Seahawks mounted a decisive five run rally in the sixth, producing a lead which The Mount was unable to overcome. In the seventh frame, both teams tallied a pair of runs as the Seahawks took the 8-4 victory. 

Following two scoreless inning, junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) put the Green & White on board in the top of the third by lacing a solo home run over the right field fence. Mount St. Mary's responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run over the leftfield fence by Courtney Zingle, taking a 2-1 advantage. 

In the top of the sixth, senior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) put the Seahawks in scoring position, leading off with a triple to right field. Freshman Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) tied the game at two on an RBI double to left center, scoring Eshelman, before Nicoletti gave Wagner the lead for good on a two-run single up the middle. Scoring on Nicoletti's double were Garcia (reached on a single up the middle) and Huss. After junior Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls) scored on a wild pitch, freshman Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia) capped a five-run burst with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Nicoletti for a 6-2 lead. 

The Seahawks added two runs in the seventh on Nicoletti's single to shortstop and a single to third by freshman Alyssa McCulloch (East Brunswick,NJ / East Brunswick), extending their lead to six runs. Scoring on the plays were Garcia (reached on a single to shortstop) and junior Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) (reached on a single to left), respectively. 

The Mount managed to cut the Seahawks lead to four in the bottom of the frame, scoring a pair of unearned runs on a Wagner miscue. 

Freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) (5-7) earned her fifth win of the season while pitching a complete game. Betz allowed just two earned runs and fanned three. 

In the nightcap, The Mount scored a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to earn the win and split the twinbill with Wagner. 

Freshman Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) (4-6) took the loss through 4.0 innings of pitching. DeBinder allowed two earned runs while fanning one. Also seeing time in the circle was senior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley). Wagoner pitched for 2.0 innings of play, allowing two earned runs and striking out three. 

Wagner returns to action tomorrow, Sunday April 11th when the Seahawks travel to West Long Branch, NJ to face NEC foe Monmouth University in a doubleheader at 12:00PM.
