Clearwater, FL- After facing fierce competition in day one of the University of South Florida's Under Armor Invitational, the Wagner College softball team fell to 0-7 on the season. Wagner's losses came to Western Michigan University 11-3 and Loyola University 8-1.
In game one, the Seahawks lost a hard-fought eight-inning contest after taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Wagner's lead came via junior
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) home run over the right field fence. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, Western Michigan's decisive nine-run eighth inning would propel the Broncos over the Seahawks 11-3.
The Broncos struck first, platting a run in the top of the second inning on a Wagner miscue. After loading the bases in the bottom of the frame, the Green & White tied up the game at 1-1 when senior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) reached on a base on balls, scoring freshman
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek).
Wagner took the lead in the bottom of the third when Garcia notched her home run, giving the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage. The Broncos would score once more in the top of the seventh, bringing the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Western Michigan scored nine runs, producing a lead which the Seahawks were unable to recover from. Freshman
Alyssa McCulloch (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) was able to tally one more run for the Green & White in the bottom of the frame off an RBI double to left center.
Sharing time in the circle for Wagner were freshmen
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run),
Terah Debinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) and senior
Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley). Betz hurled 7.0 innings of action, not allowing any earned runs. Debinder allowed one earned run in 1/3 of an inning while Wagoner finished the game.
In game two, Loyola scattered runs across the first, third and fifth innings while allowing just one Wagner run.
The Seahawks' lone run came in the top of the fourth on sophomore
Laura Hennig's (Dyer IN / Munster HS) RBI single to left center.
In the circle, Garcia took the loss through 2.1 innings of play. The junior allowed five earned runs while striking out two. Wagoner tossed for 2/3 of an inning while Debinder finished the 3.0 innings of action, striking out two.
