Softball Sweeps Bryant in Home Opener

Freshman Krysta Fauria
Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team opened home play with a doubleheader sweep of Northeast Conference (NEC) competitor Bryant University at Wagner's Lower Athletic Field. The Green & White secured the victories by scores of 3-0 and 9-3. With the wins, the Seahawks move to 7-18 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

Freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) pitched a gem in the circle for Wagner in the first contest for her third win of the season. The freshman fanned four batters and allowed only two hits in the game.

The Seahawks got on board in the third inning when freshman Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia) reached on a double to center field and then scored off an error by Bryant's second baseman.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Wagner extended its lead to 3-0 on sophomore Vanessa Lenart's (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) two-run single to second base. Scoring on the play were junior Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY / C.W. Baker).

Throughout the remainder of the contest, Betz and the rest of the Seahawk defense kept the Bulldog bats scoreless as Wagner garnered the 3-0 victory.

In the nightcap, a four-run first inning started the scoring off for the Seahawks. Sophomore Laura Hennig's (Dyer IN / Munster HS) double to left field drove in the first run of the game, plating junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista), who had also reached on a double to left field. Fauria gave the Seahawks a 2-0 advantage when she scored on an error by Bryant's catcher. Nicoletti drove in the final two runs of the inning on a triple to right field, scoring Hennig and senior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen).

Wagner tacked on another run in the bottom of the second on Fauria's double to right field, plating Pierce (reached on a single to shortstop).

In the bottom of the third inning, Olsen reached base via a walk and Nicoletti followed with single through the left side. Both runners then scored and the Green & White took a 7-0 lead on Lenart's double up the middle.

Bryant attempted to rally back in the top of the fourth, notching three runs on a single to center field and a two-run double to left field.

Sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) capped off the Seahawks scoring in the bottom of the sixth when she laced a two-run home run, bringing Wagner's lead to 9-3. The Bulldogs remained scoreless through the final inning as the Seahawks earned the win and the sweep.

Freshman Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) notched her fourth win of the season in the circle, pitching six and one-thirds of action while fanning six batters. Betz finished the final two-thirds of an inning.

Wagner returns to action Thursday, April 1st when the Seahawks travel to Jersey City, NJ to face St. Peter's College in a doubleheader at 3:00PM.
