Saint Francis (PA) Edges Wagner 13-12 in Overtime

The Wagner College women's lacrosse team suffered an excruciating 13-12 overtime loss to Saint Francis (PA) in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-5 on the season while the Red Flash improve to 4-3. 

The game was tight throughout as the biggest lead either team enjoyed was two goals when the Red Flash took a 7-5 lead early in the second half. Wagner trailed 11-10 and forced overtime when junior attacker Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) notched a goal with 34 seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 11-11.
 
The Seahawks struck first in overtime as senior midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) scored to put Wagner on top 12-11. The Red Flash responded with a goal by Kate Simmons that knotted the game at 12-12. Chelsea Kent then sank the game-winner with 12 seconds remaining to lift Saint Francis (PA) to victory. 

Malayter led Wagner offensively with three goals while sophomore midfielder #Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/Westhill)# and junior attacker Dana Marchitelli (Annapolis, MD/South River) added two goals apiece. Marchitelli also had two assists in the game. In goal, senior Alex Jonston (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded 12 saves. 

Statistically, the game was virtually dead even as each team took 30 shots. Saint Francis (PA) held a slim 24-23 edge in ground balls while draw controls were even at 14-14. 

The Seahawks continue their Western Pennsylvania road swing on Sunday, March 21 vs. Robert Morris in a 1:00 pm start.
