Seahawks Defeat Marist at Rebel Spring Games, 11-6

Senior Kate Eshelman
Kissimmee, FL -  The Wagner College softball team split a pair of games late this afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games' Osceola Complex. The Seahawks defeated Marist 11-6 in the nightcap after falling in game one to Colgate 5-1.

In game two, the Seahawks battled back and forth with the Red Foxes until a decisive seven-run fourth inning in which the Green & White propelled out to an 11-3 lead. In the fifth, Marist attempted to rally back, scoring three runs. However, Wagner's lead would be too much for the Red Foxes to recover from as the Green & White took an 11-6 victory.

Marist opened up the scoring in the top of the first, scoring on a single to right field. Wagner responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 1-1 on senior Kate Eshelman's (Reno, NV / McQueen) RBI double up the middle. Scoring on the play was freshman Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia) who reached on a single to second base.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Seahawks tallied two more runs on freshmen Alyssa McCulloch's (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) double to right center and Terah DeBinder's (Cypress, CA / Cypress) single to center field. Scoring on the plays were freshman Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) (reached on a single through the left side) and McCulloch, respectively.

The Red Foxes locked up the game once again in the top of the third 3-3, scoring two runs on a double down the left field line. Wagner responded in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead on Huss's single up the middle. Scoring on the play was sophomore Amanda Garcia (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) who reached on a through the left side.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wagner jumped out to a seven-run lead, scoring seven runs on five hits. Garcia plated the first run of the inning on a single through the left side, scoring Fauria who reached on a single up the middle. Marist's Caitlin Schell then walked in the next two runners before Garcia scored on a wild pitch. Huss followed with a two-run double to left center, plating junior Christina Pinkus (Cohasset, MA / Cohasset) (walked) and junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) (walked). Freshman Erin Cuevas (Westminster, CA / Marina High School) drove in Wagner's final run on a single up the middle, extending the Seahawks' lead to 11-3. Scoring on the play was Huss.

Marist would score three more runs on three hits in the top of the fifth frame but it was not enough as Wagner went on to garrner the 11-6 victory.

In the circle, freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) earned her first win of the season through 7.0 innings of action. Throughout the contest, the freshman fanned four while allowing just two earned runs.

In game one, Wagner's one-run lead in the second inning wouldn't be enough as Colgate scattered runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Seahawks' lone run in the second came off Huss's single up the middle, plating junior Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls) who reached on a walk. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, the Raiders brought the game to 1-1 when DeBinder walked in the tying run. Colgate tallied a second run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly before notching three more runs on a pair of singles in the sixth.

In the circle, DeBinder garnered her first loss of the season through 5.1 innings of action. The California native allowed four runs while fanning three. Finishing the remaining 0.2 of an inning was Betz who allowed one run on three hits and struck out one.

Wagner returns to action tomorrow, March 14th for the Seahawks' final day of competition in the Rebel Games with a doubleheader against Akron at 9:00AM and 11:00AM.
